Reports: Yankees like Lowell for first base

QUOTE

Even as the Yankees press ahead in their talks to bring third baseman Alex Rodriguez back into the fold, free agent Mike Lowell remains a point of interest.

If anything, the Yankees are now coming at Lowell from another angle ... or corner.

According to reports in the New York Post and Star Ledger of Newark, the Yankees are talking with Lowell, Boston's third baseman the last two seasons, about moving from third to first.

"All I can say at this time is that the Yankees have engaged us," one of Lowell's agents, Seth Levinson, told the Post.

Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein put a new contract for the World Series MVP on the table last week, a three-year offer reportedly worth in the $35 million to $45 million range.

Where the Red Sox were the only team that could negotiate with Lowell through midnight on Monday, others now can make offers. It's not known if the Yankees and Lowell's agents have advanced beyond the discussion phase.

Not good news for Boston, if the Yankees get both Lowell and ARod.

This is why I made the case that we need to sign ARod right away and then worry about Lowell. Just so the Yankees are left out with nothing.

Theo better have something in store.

Redsox can counter by signing Miggy Cabrera to play 3B.

    Trade.

But they have traded for Beckett, so they know the Marlins, or at least have a workable partner.

If they land Miggy, Red Sox win. Miggy >>>> and then some over Lowell.

If the Yankees want a 1st basemen, they should go after Miggy as that is where everyone expects him to wind up anyway.

I'd like to seethe Soxre-sign Lowell, and then sign Alex Rodriguez to go back to shortstop. I'm wondering why the possibility of him playing SS again hasn't been brought up anywhere (that i know of).

I'm not a huge Miguel Cabrera guy.

Bad move for the Yanks. Lowell will be a Type A, so the Yankees will lose 2 picks (a first and a sandwich).

    B

The Sox would have to give up Jacoby and mini-Beckett (Clay) for Miggy.

Well worth it. Would you give up both and more for ARod, or Pujols? Cause Miggy is in that very select group of hitters. Trading for Miggy also gives them leverage against Manny, and insurance in case one day Manny goes too far and they have to part ways.

Not saying he's not worth it, just that he costs a lot.

And a lot of Lowell's strength is in his defense. He benefitted a lot from the monste, making his double numbers go up. He's made for the red sox.

I'd love to see Lowell back in red, but only if he takes a hometown discount. Putting Lowell in Pinstripes wouldn't upset me too much, seeing as we have Youks who can switch back to 3B and most any scrub can play 1B. If we end up putting a package together for Johan (Clay + Ellsbury?) I'd be estatic. Don't get me wrong, I adore Ellsbury (Fun fact: I was at his first MLB game, and Clay's no-hitter) but with a staff of Johan, Beckett, Schil, Dice-K, Wake we'd be utterly unstoppable. We have Jed Lowrie and Brandon Moss sitting in Triple-A waiting for their shot to be the next Ellsbury. We also have a relatively young pitching staff with Beckett being 27 and Lester being pretty young.

Trust me, I'm already pretty familiar with most of the posters here hehe. (I can't find the damn wink smiley)

But I appreciate the welcome. For the record, I'm also a C's fan (and a damned happy one at that).

Great post. I agree 100%. Get Johan, pitching is what's most important.

    And say no to A-Rod.

While I still resent the fact A-Rod went to the MFY, I can't see any cons that don't have an equal pro in bringing in the back-to-back MVP onto the team. I don't believe that a player is the reason why a team can't win a World Series. Sure, A-Rod can be an ego maniac, but is Manny really any different? He rarely runs out ground balls and is back and forth on whether or not he wants to be a Red Sox (Red Sock?) keeping the clubhouse in termoil. But again, don't get me wrong, I love Man-Ram.

Yeah AG, thats a perfect example, and what I like about ARod is that he's the best player in the league period, plus having him in our uniform while he breaks Bonds record would be awesome. [IMG]

The one thing I'm worried about is Theo being wary of bringing in new faces seeing as both D.L Drew and Lugo were decidedly unsuccessful in their first season as Red Sox. That being said, I see them both having better years next year.

An infield of A-Rod, Youks, Pedroia, FA 1B would be gold glove winning, even if we put in a scrub at first. But A-Rodless or not, I'm excited to see what the future holds for the Sawx.
