Rondo makes the jump

QUOTE

If Rajon Rondo was easily awed, then he probably wouldn’t be in this business.

But just more than a week ago, during the team’s annual tipoff gala at the InterContinental Hotel, the Celtics point guard was impressed by the on-stage talent, which included teammates Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen and former C’s legends Bob Cousy and Bill Walton.

“These were great examples for me to line up to,” Rondo said this week of his role, when balanced against the presence of the New Three. “As long as I play with those guys, I’m going to be a rookie.

This wasn’t so much a conversation as a directive, just as when Allen started showing up for independent workouts extra early so he could have a role in shaping the young point guard’s game.

“He’s just teaching me,” Rondo said of Allen’s influence on his improving jumper.

“Just seeing how hard he works at it makes me want to keep going.

So now for something completely unexpected.

Rondo - the same player who was in such drastic need of a jump shot to complete his game last season - is shooting 52.6 percent (30-for-57) from the field after seven games.

Considering he shot 41.8 percent as a rookie, there may not be another player who is a better example of the New Three’s peripheral effect.

“Playing with these guys, I’m getting wide-open looks,” he said. “Wide-open shots. With them on the floor, I don’t have to worry about finding good shots.”

That’s all that Doc Rivers asks.

“He’s taking good shots,” the Celtics coach said. “It’s what I’ve said 100 times. I don’t believe in bad shooters. I believe in good shots. And Rajon is taking good shots. He’s not jacking up 3’s because they’re giving him 3’s. He’s stepping in and taking in-between jump shots. That’s his shot. So he’s really understanding, and it’s been big for us.”

Preseason people were all over Rondo and how he was going to bring the C's down. I felt he would be fine and has been great. He not only has a year under his belt, but with the Big 3 he does not need to do as much. You can see him getting more confident. Another nice pickup by Danny!

I really like what I'm seeing from Rondo. I don't think he's attempted many outside shots, but his mid-range game is growing nicely.

I've been very, very impressed with what I've seen. He's the fourth leading scorer behind the Big 3 and playing awesome ball. I'd like to see a few more assists out of him, but I'm not complaining.
