Milledge, Perez lift Mets past Reds in series finale

NY METS 5, CINCINNATI 2
FLUSHING, New York (Ticker) -- Lastings Milledge's return tothe major leagues has been successful so far. On Sunday, theyoungster contributed to a positive return for Oliver Perez.

Milledge ripped a two-run double in the bottom of the secondinning and Perez pitched six effective frames as the New York
Mets posted a 5-2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds in the
finale of a four-game series.

In a turbulent 2006 rookie season, Milledge appeared in 56 gamesand batted .241. He made the team out of spring training thisseason but had three at-bats due to a crowded outfield and wasoptioned to Class AAA New Orleans, where he sprained his rightfoot shortly thereafter.

The injury prevented Milledge from replacing Moises Alou, whohas been on the disabled list for nearly two months with astrained quad.

Instead, Carlos Gomez got the chance and performed decently. But when Gomez fractured a bone in his left hand on July 4,Milledge was needed and was promoted to the Mets prior toThursday's series opener.

After scoring the go-ahead run Thursday and hitting the go-aheadsingle in the eighth inning on Saturday, Milledge capped athree-run second inning a day later with a double to right fieldthat scored Carlos Delgado and Ramon Castro.

It proved to be enough for Perez (8-6), who was activated fromthe disabled list before the game. Perez had not pitched forthe Mets since June 26 due to a back injury and struck out sevenin a minor league rehab game on Tuesday.

On an 87-degree day, Perez allowed two runs and six hits. Hestruck out six, walked three and threw 62 of 95 pitches forstrikes.

Pedro Feliciano worked a scoreless seventh, Aaron Heilman didthe same in the eighth and Billy Wagner recorded his 20th savein 21 opportunities.

After allowing Adam Dunn's 25th home run, Perez had a four-runlead to work with when Jose Reyes homered to right in the fifthoff Kyle Lohse (5-11). It was Reyes' sixth home run of theseason and second of the series.

The larger cushion proved valuable to Perez in the sixth.Cincinnati opened the frame with three straight singles and madeit a three-run game on Brandon Phillips' RBI single, whichbrought up Dunn with runners on first and second.

Dunn made contact, but this time it stayed in the ballpark as heflied out to center field. Edwin Encarnacion and Pedro Lopezfollowed with flyouts, and the Reds never threatened again.

Lohse failed to win his third straight start as he allowed fiveruns and six hits in 4 2/3 innings. Just nine days after firinga four-hitter against the Arizona Diamondbacks, Lohse becamethe third pitcher in the majors to reach 11 losses.

"It is (a little different than earlier this season)," Milledgesaid. "They're giving me a chance to play. I'll always waitfor next week or so until Moises comes back. I'm going to takefull advantage and see what happens."

"When you're playing well and getting big hits, that's theenergy," Mets manager Willie Randolph said. "Obviously, he's ayoung player with a lot of enthusiasm, but the bottom line isgetting big hits and that's where the energy part comes in."

After scoring the go-ahead run Thursday and hitting the go-aheadsingle in the eighth inning on Saturday, Milledge capped athree-run second inning a day later with a double to right fieldthat scored Carlos Delgado and Ramon Castro.

"I knew he was going to go away," said Milledge, who had fiveRBI in the series. "So I was thinking try to hit something outof the ballpark to the right side of the field. I was able toget a good pitch to drive, and that's what I did with it."

"I didn't get away with much," Reds starter Kyle Lohse said."On Milledge, I knew he's looking hard away early and I justmissed."

"I felt good," said Perez, who also added that his back is 100percent. "I worked hard and it's real important to keep theteam in the game. It's important coming back like that, and Ifelt real good."

"That was perfect," Randolph said. "(He threw) a great gamecoming back and picking us up. He didn't miss much of a beatand came in and got the job for us."

"When I hit a home run, I feel happy," Reyes said. "It doesn'thappen too often."

"The last time I saw him he was flawless," Reds interim managerPete Mackanin said. "He knows he made some mistakes with thosepitches and he paid for them."

The Reds dropped to 6-4 since Mackanin took over for JerryNarron two weeks ago.
