Surprise, surprise.

    The Celtics are mortal.

“We are a team that is going to fight - we are not perfect,” Kevin Garnett said. “We are a team of character. We will learn from this.”

“This” was Sunday’s 104-102 loss to Orlando, the 8-1 Celtics’ first of the season.

No undefeated teams remain in the NBA, as Amway Arena’s hyperbolic public address announcer informed the roaring Orlando crowd.

So like San Antonio, Phoenix, Detroit, Dallas and, yes, Orlando before them, the Celtics have come down to earth.

There will be nights when their vaunted trio is a step slow, like Garnett in his failed attempt to guard the Magic’s Rashard Lewis Sunday.

Ray Allen, for all of his perimeter skill, is going to feel the chill at times. The Celtics guard was an unsightly 7-for-17 from the field against the Magic. Indeed, Allen hasn’t been his typically pure-shooter self for a week now.

“It seemed like the last two or three nights haven’t felt right, but I’ll get that back,” he said.

Celtics fans have seen Paul Pierce make the wrong choice on late-game shots in the past, and there are sure to be more times this season, as well. Sunday’s evidence was the captain’s attempt at a game-winner with 1.9 seconds left. He opted for a 27-foot, 3-point attempt when a drive would have made much more sense. But Pierce, a little ticked off that his judgment was questioned, shrugged. He was feeling it. He was wrong.

This also won’t stop him the next time.

Five minutes after the buzzer, the Celtics already had moved on. Their 8-0 start may have been great for the fans, but it really was little more than a number for them.

“Nothing,” Allen said of the early streak’s significance. “There’s nothing to reflect on. We have a lot of competitors in this locker room, and we know that we could have won this game.

“We had (two 3-pointers) and a (missed) layup at the end, and you think, whoa, if I had one of those shots over again I’d still take it.”

Haha. Hell, even if we would have lost a game last year by just two points, it'd be the talk of the town and people would be saying "the kids are growing up fast!"
