BOSTON (Ticker) - The Boston Celtics suffered no hangover fromtheir first loss of the season.

Ray Allen hit three key 3-pointers as part of a 13-point thirdquarter and finished with 21 points to help the Celticsoverpower the Golden State Warriors, 105-82, Wednesday night atthe TD Banknorth Garden.

Kevin Garnett had 20 points and 10 rebounds and Paul Pierceadded 19 and 10 as the Celtics remained perfect in six homegames.

Boston (9-1) was playing its first game since suffering itsfirst loss of the season Sunday night in Orlando. The Celticscame out with an emphasis on defense, holding the Warriors tojust 7-of-25 shooting in the first quarter and 29-of-87 (33percent) in the contest.

Monta Ellis led the Warriors (3-7) with 21 while Stephen Jacksonchipped in with 15. Golden State, which had recorded wins inToronto and New York, saw its three-game winning streak snappedand lost for the first time on its six-game East Coast roadtrip.

The Warriors came into the game without two of their top playersin Al Harrington and Matt Barnes - both were absent due topersonal reasons - and Troy Hudson also was out with a strainedleft hip.

The Celtics took advantage early, scoring the game's first fivepoints before eventually grabbing a 22-12 lead on Allen's stealand layup with 2:18 remaining in the opening quarter. Bostonled, 25-16, after the first quarter.

Golden State drew to within six points twice early in the secondquarter before James Posey connected on two free throws with9:42 remaining to start a 16-3 Celtics spurt. BrianScalabrine's 3-pointer capped the run and gave Boston a 42-23advantage with 5:33 remaining in the half.

In the first half, the Warriors looked like a team playing forthe second straight night on a cross-country swing throughEastern Conference teams.

Starters Mickael Pietrus and Kelenna Azubuike each went 0-for-5from the field as the Warriors made just 14-of-17 field goalattempts on their way to shooting 29.8 percent. Boston alsodominated the glass in the first 24 minutes, outreboundingGolden State, 31-14.

The second half proved to be no different as Boston continued toextend its lead behind Allen's big third quarter.

The Celtics won the battle of the boards, 52-40, and got 15points off the bench from guard Eddie House as the reservesguided the team to the win in the fourth quarter.

Re: NBA: GOLDEN STATE (3-6) at BOSTON (8-1)

Tired legs and Pietrus at starting power forward is a bad combo.

There were so many bad things I can't even label them all. I just don't like Nelson's small ball, his love of Pietrus and Mbenga, and his attitude toward rookies...

On the positive side, Austin Croshere against Scott Pollard matchup worked well. The dude can drive with that first step of his.

Wright looked good in his limited action. He got some second chance points and even made some nice putbacks.

Mbenga... wtf? The positive was that he didn't see much playing time. God that guy really sucks. I mean he's just bad... so awful... I wanted to see O'Bryant rewarded for that game where he scored with authority, instead Don Nelson goes to the creature cage instead of to the bench. Shiet, what is Nelson thinking? O'Bryant must have gone mandingo on his wife or something... I don't understand it. Why does Nelson hate POB so much and would rather play the D-league's parody of interior scoring. It just further legitimizes the excuse why we shouldn't go inside more and just shoot outside jumpers.

Mbenga... more like I Mbenga my head on the table everytime I watch him try to make a putback layup or dunk or do anything related to scoring.

Boston (9-1) was playing its first game since suffering itsfirst loss of the season Sunday night in Orlando.

"The good teams in the league never lose two in a row," Allensaid. "When you lose a game, you know how to respond and how togo about competing. Even if you lose two in a row, sometimesyou just want to compete and give your best effort. Sometimesyou do lose two in a row because you face a couple of hotteams."

The Celtics came out with an emphasis on defense, holding theWarriors to just 7-of-25 shooting in the first quarter and 33percent (29-of-87) in the contest.

"Defensively, they were pretty darn good," Warriors coach DonNelson said. "What makes them so good is, of course, Garnett. He's just everywhere. And they work hard at it, but we didn'tgive them much of a challenge. We didn't move the ball, wedidn't shoot it when we had it. We were a terrible teamtonight."

Monta Ellis led the Warriors with 21 points while StephenJackson chipped in with 15. Golden State, which had recordedwins in Toronto and New York, saw its three-game winning streaksnapped and lost for the first time on its six-game East Coastroad trip.

"We were more in tune to the things we're not doing wellconsistently, and trying to fix those things," Garnett said."That's what tonight was about."

"A team like that on the second night of a back-to-back you haveto put them away early," Pierce said. "If you give them anysort of confidence, those teams can sneak up on you."

"You can't use back-to-back games as an excuse, because we havea ton of back-to-back this year, if we use that excuse now, thenwe go to every back-to-back with that mentality," Ellis said."We just got beat tonight and we didn't shoot the ball well atall. We have to shoot better with teams like that, andhopefully, we get over this and bounce back the next game."

Starters Mickael Pietrus and Kelenna Azubuike each went 0-of-5from the field as the Warriors made just 14-of-17 field-goalattempts on their way to shooting 30 percent. Boston alsodominated the glass in the first 24 minutes, outreboundingGolden State, 31-14.

"I think we missed open shots when we had them and theychallenged some of them," Nelson said. "We just couldn't getanything done. Just one of those games. It happens. I'm notthat upset. We've got two more games on this road trip, so weneed a day of rest.

"We've got four in five days. The schedule-maker wasn't kind tous. But anyway, we've got another back-to-back. A day off, another back-to-back coming up. So we hope we can do a littlebetter."

The second half proved to be no different as Boston continued toextend its lead behind Allen's big third quarter.

The Celtics won the battle of the boards, 52-40, and got 15points off the bench from guard Eddie House as the reservesguided the team to the win in the fourth quarter.

"Yeah, we needed it," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said of theblowout win. "We needed this. We needed the break (THursday). We have to get through these two coming up, and then we get alittle break again, which will be very nice for us."

Hey can sportsticker append the updated post to the original post instead of creating a new post every single time there's a change?

I think a separate game thread would help with discussion. The sports ticker posts get in the way. I actually didn't even know there was discussion going on in this thread until last week. But then again I work in the evening so I can't really post in game. DVR rocks!

Re: NBA: GOLDEN STATE (3-6) at BOSTON (8-1)

We basically stood no chance in this game. Second game of a back to back on the road, no Al, no Barnes, Pietrus starting, and we weren't hitting our 3 pt shots.

Agree with you CR2, playing Mbenga sucks on Nellie's part IMO. I really want to know what the hell POB does to make NEllie hate him so much. You'd think for a guy that loves offense so much Nellie woulnd't play Mbenga unless he absolutely had to. POB has been very solid this year and he gets dinged for every game he plays well, just doesn't make sense to me.

In other news B. Wright is a stud like I said. ; ) I miss JR but IMO you can already see this trade paying off as J-Rich is having a bad year and Wright is already working his way into the rotation. Hopefully he'll get a lot more run in these upcoming games against teams with weak frontlines; Washington, Philly, PHX, Sac, etc. I don't think anyone passed him the ball the whole time he played last night but he still managed to score on a running 10 foot J and his patented lefty baby hook (he probably hit like 85% on those shots in college). He also had an obvious goaltend but somehow the refs missed it, still showed excellent leaping ability and length. He also rebounded like a fuggin monster and several times he started the break and dribbled the ball past half court. He'll be the perfect Nellie PF in a year or two, but will Nellie be here when it happens?
