QUOTE

Last season, Anderson Varejao played a key role as the Cleveland Cavaliers won the Eastern Conference title -- he was arguably the Cavs' best young player behind LeBron James.

This season, Varejao is playing in a gym more than a thousand miles from Cleveland in Vitoria, Brazil, while the Cavs struggle to replace Varejao's defensive intensity in the middle.

What's he doing? Working on his jump hook. Trying to stay in shape. And most importantly, waiting.

He's waiting for the lucrative contract he thought he'd sign this offseason.

And waiting for Cleveland general manager Danny Ferry to "show me that he values my contribution to the team," Varejao told ESPN.com by phone in a rare interview.

"I just want to be treated fairly and I don't think Danny's done that."

Magloires expiring contract, Boone, first round pick, and cash considerations?

good god. I wouldn't give a first round pick for Varejao, let along boone, magloire, and cash. Plus remember how short our roster is already

Too big of contract for a back-up. For some reason, him listening to his agent has made him look like a total idiot.

I wouldn't mind him on the team...not a huge fan of his, but he could provide a lot of energy off the bench, rebound, and take a bunch of charges. But not for anywhere near the price he wants.

Let him stay in Brazil. Varejao tends to forget that he isn't that player he thinks he is. All he's doing right now is being an ass.

I read somewhere that he said he's not asking for 10 million annually. He said who ever reported that, did not talk to him or his agent. Probably a Ferry leak. He's after a long term MLE deal. 5 years 30 million is more what he's been after. One day Ferry decided to forego Varejao's agent and just went to Varejao with the contract to sign, hoping that he'd just sign it. I think that's what ticked Varejao off. I think anyone on that team not named Lebron will be disrespected no matter who it is. Just by looking at this incident, who'd want to deal with management like Ferry? LBJ in Brooklyn!!!

I'd give them magloire and a 2nd rounder at most or just magloire and boone. that's all i'd give them, he's basically a statistically better collins.

FAIR? How can he talk about fair when he's asking for around $10 million per year. That's a huge amount and he's not that great. He's good, not great. I'm glad he doesn't want to play in Cleveland if he's gonna be an egotistical, crazy, money-chasing idiot.

However, in Boozer's case, it turns out that the Cavs did lowball him.

QUOTE (Anderson Varejao)

Varejao said media reports that he's asking for a contract averaging $10-11 million a season "just aren't true. There are a lot of things being written that are wrong. I know they aren't talking to me or my agent."

That's straight from the article. I dunno why someone posts an article with an explicit refutation of a statement and then there are immediately several attacks on a statement as if it were true, but it's clearly not.

For $35-$40M, who doesn't need a young 6'10" 250lb guy who plays good defense?

Maybe he's asking for in excess of $10M. Hahaha.

The Cavs have offered him between $6M or $7M. I felt this was more than fair for Varejao, the actual number he wants must be somewhere in between $7M to $10M

According to that article they've only offered 5 years and $32M, or just under $5.29M to start and $6.4M average. That's basically the MLE and I could imagine him getting a bit more if he was an unrestricted free agent.

Of course, I don't think he's gonna get enough more that he ought to be holding out over it, but then again, I don't have an NBA player sized ego.
