Glen Davis brought energy and intensity to the court in 31 minutes of play tonight. But the fan-favorite deflected most of the praise that came his way. When asked if he thought the bench stepped up, Davis pulled a KG.

"That's not the approach you want to take," said Davis. "We won today. That's the most important thing."

Davis credited a teammate and one of his coaches for his continued improvement this seson.

"I consider them (Kevin Garnett and Clifford Ray) like wizards of the game," said Davis. "They've been in the game so long, and they've been so successful on the defensive and offensive side, tutoring me, helping me every day, consistently, is helping."

Shall we say a steal in the draft?

I wish he was a bit taller so he can dunk. haha

Big Baby showing signs of growing up

QUOTE

Glen Davis managed to get largely hidden by the magnitude of the 104-59 beating the Celtics [team stats] put on the Knicks last night.

And when you consider Big Baby’s girth and game, that’s not an easy thing to do.

But even during a thrashing that strained the bounds of the Geneva Convention, Davis’ elevation in the Celtics rotation still managed to leave a mark.

The rookie and Brian Scalabrine were the first players off the Celts’ bench, continuing a rise for Bambino Grande that has seen him go for totals of 21 points and eight rebounds in the last two games after sitting the previous two by coach’s decision.

It was 20-8 when Davis first entered last night’s game, still a sporting contest of sorts. When next he came out, deep into the second quarter some 13 minutes later, the spread was 22 and the Knicks were pretty much mathematically eliminated.

Big Baby finished with 13 points and six boards and the growing trust of coach Doc Rivers.

“I feel like he’s getting there with me each day,” said Davis. “The more and more consistency I show, the more he can be like, ‘OK, this kid is really trying to help the team.’ Whatever he wants me to do, I’m willing to do it. I want them to be able to rely on me and trust me coming off the bench to deliver.”

Rivers is beginning to believe the kid can be a regular part of the rotation.

“Yeah, I am,” the coach said. “He’s starting to really study our game plans better and understand every night what we’re trying to do. He plays with great energy. He’s physical, and he wants to play minutes, and he has the hunger. As long as he keeps that, we’re in good shape.”

Davis will get his body into even better shape if he continues to play the 31 minutes he did last night. But that count was largely a function of the abuse taking place on the parquet, stuff so gruesome it set off the V-Chip on televisions around the country.

The greater value of Baby’s performance may have been in keeping down the minutes of Kevin Garnett, who played just 23 with another test in Miami on tap for tonight.

His teammates are starting to see what he can provide.

“It’s funny you say that,” said captain Paul Pierce [stats]. “I mentioned it before the game that Glen came in for about three minutes in Cleveland and really was an active body and really helped out the second unit (he had eight points in six minutes). I was like, man, it’d be nice to see him get some extended minutes. I was kind of saying that to (Rajon) Rondo before the game, and you look up and he’s out there early in the game.

“He’s been big. He’s learning each and every day in practice, especially when you’ve got a guy like Kevin who’s kind of taken him under his wing. Now when Glen comes into the game that early he’s ready.”

Ready physically and mentally. The gregarious Davis has grasped the fact that having fun in games isn’t all fun and games.

“You know, it took me a while to figure that out,” Davis said. “The more and more I came to practice every day, like, this is a job. This is hard.”

And it’s hard to fathom that the same guy who delighted in telling about eating a plate of octopus in Rome has now gone all serious on us.

“You know, basketball’s a fun sport, but it’s a job,” Big Baby said. “And when I’m out on the court it’s a business. It’s a business and it’s a team, and that’s the approach I have to take. But I’ll laugh and joke right now if you want me to.”

    OK, mostly serious.

There's no reason why Doc should have handed him a DNP-CD last night. That made no sense at all.

Makes perfect sense for Glenn. You know it's funny, I was going to comment yesterday saying "Now let's watch him be stuck in the 'Doc-House' until somewhere the end of the season."

    Today:

21 min. 4-5 shooting. 9 pts, 7 bounds. Very nice - and thanks (again) Danny. Or was this pick also just luck?

I think its pretty clear what Ainge's drafting forumla is. High school kids (or college freshmen, or foreigners) with early picks. College seniors or juniors with later picks. Davis fits that and he's a good pick.

Big Baby was great today... absolutely phenomenal off the bench. He deserves the game ball, in my opinion. He brought a ton of energy, was exceptional around the basket, and I think he gave Big Z more problems than KG or Perk did. There's no reason for Big Baby to ever get a DNP-CD ever again.

Quick feet and very mobil for his girth. Given that his only competition for playing time is Mr. Moobs he should get as much as he can handle this year. He's going to eat into Perkins' time in Chicago games, they need his ability to flash out on shooters more than Perkins rim defense against the (Not So) IncrediBulls. Garnett terrorised the Bulls shooters on Saturday, and Davis effectively bothered them. I wish he were taller or had longer arms, but if that were the case he probably wouldn't have lasted until the start of the second round.
