Let's start this entry off by saying this is not a news item, it's not even a rumor. It's merely an NBA fan in Bill Simmons, who has one of the most-read sports columns in the country, throwing around a theoretical situation. So why put it in this blog? Well, it gives us something fun to debate while not much else is going on.

November 29, ESPN.com: James (Murfreesboro, TN): Do the Suns have a serious shot at winning the NBA title as they are constructed, or do you think they need to add something? How good would Mike Miller or Anderson Varejao look on that team?

SportsNation Bill Simmons: I think the Suns need to make a deal - they're too soft and they can't get stops. G-State ran all over them the other night; it was like a layup line. I am patiently waiting for them to put Amare into play because that's the real problem here - they have enough offense as it is, and he's a terrible defensive player. I would love to see them trade him to Detroit for Rasheed Wallace and Jason Maxiell, I think that trade makes them tougher and better defensively. Rasheed can guard Duncan one-on-one and Amare can't - and they're not getting to the Finals without beating SA.

Chris (Boston): How about Amare and Banks for Chandler and Bobby Jackson? Gives the Suns a great defensive big man, who is still young, with a decent contract, plus a good veteran PG to backup Nash and allow Barbosa to slide over to the 2. And it gives Chris Paul a legit finisher.

SportsNation Bill Simmons: It's a very logical trade on paper (although NO should have to throw in Julian Wright as well), but Kerr and Sarver would get killed in Phoenix for that one by the casual fans who don't understand the league and think Amare is a top-5 guy because he scores so much. At least if they traded for Rasheed Wallace, you could sell that one because he's such a smart player and has been such a winner over the years.

Remember, there was an unsubstantiated rumor this summer that the Suns had Amare on the trading block. Now considering Wallace's age, and potential sell-high value with his impressive start to the season, is this a deal that would interest you as fan?

Thanks to RobG in MLive.com's Pistons forum for pointing out the Simmon's chat.

That whole chat was ridiculous. Did you see his proposed Johan Santana trades?

That article is BS. Amare has too much upside to ever be traded. The guy is already a great scorer, but he's working really hard on his defense. Consider that he came out of high school, so he didn't have those maturing years of college. So consider his first four years as learning years. Then he lost a year to injury. So he's only had a year or two past those leaning years. The guy has a long career ahead of him to become a dominant defensive player. Even if he doesn't become one of the greats, I'll gladly stay a Suns fan as long as he's in the line up.

I like Bill Simmons, but he's got no idea what Amare's value is.
