He is a restricted FA. The Cavs could still match.

If the deal is reasonable, the Cavs will probably match.

Not if he told them he doesn't want to play there.

    Those are purely negotiating tactics.

This gambit is used time and again by the agents of RFAs.

As soon as another team bites and signs the player, all of a sudden everything is fine and the player has "no hard feelings" towards his old team.

In this case, it depends how much Charlotte offered him. If it's what Cleveland wants to pay him, they will match.

The Cavs could match it just to do a sign and trade anyway, couldn't they?

How come? I personally wouldn't want Varejao to return after the way he has spoken and acted over the past few months. There is noo way he should be paid more than Gooden - just look at the season he has been having. If they sign him for more than that, I know what my new sig will be.

Once the offer sheet has been signed, there can be no sign and trade per the CBA.

The Bobcats don't have the cap room to sign him to a deal bigger than what Gooden is making.

Don't care, he's been an idiot. He's a decent player, but I've lost all respect for him.

That is a 3 year max MLE deal with 8% raises

MLE is 5.356 Million, so that works out to with 428,480 raises 17,353,440

If you expect all players to go for the maximum amount of money they can get, then you won't have this problem. As a fan, you'll likely value a player differently then what they think they are worth, but there is no need to get upset about it.

I do expect players to go for the max money they can get, but I believe there is a limit. They are being paid to play the game they love. I have no quibbles about the amount some get paid ($20 million+ per year), so long as it is justified in terms of ability in relation to the rest of the players in the League. On that basis, I think the salary being offered to Varejao at the moment is fair, but due to his antics I would rather see him play elsewhere. It's more the comments that he has made about the Cavs, and the length of time he has allowed this to go on for. I heard the Cavs offered a similar sort of deal before which he didn't want since it wasn't good enough. But he had the opportunity to compete for the Championship alongside arguable the best player in the NBA right now. And he would be given ~$6 million for it. If that's not good enough for him, he doesn't deserve to play for the Cavs.

He might be acting like a blowhard, but the Cavs would be better off with him than without him at this point IMO.

Didn't the Cavs offer him a better deal in the first place? I think the money per season was close, but Cleveland was willing to give him the max length, too. With LeBron James injury I think Cleveland has to match this offer and bring Varejao in. Most of the time the comments made by players are tactics egged on by their agents. I'm sure Varejao doesn't hold any ill will towards his teammates or coach and like Real said, at the end of the day Cleveland is better with him than without.

Agreed. I was surprised to see this from Charlotte...and happy that this BS is finally gonna be over, whether the Cavs match or not.

I'm not. Toronton scored 49 points in the paint last night and that was with out Bosh, Bargnani and Ford.
