IRVING – The NFL isn't happy with Terence Newman.

In a letter dated Dec. 5, Ray Anderson, the executive vice president for football operations, told the Cowboys cornerback he was "thoughtless and irresponsible" regarding his comments about Detroit quarterback Jon Kitna.

On Monday, in an interview with Sirius' NFL Radio show, Newman said of Kitna, "He better just hope I don't blitz off the edge, because I've got 15, 25, 30 [thousand dollars], however much it would be for a fine. I've got that much for one fine. Revenge will be sweet, definitely."

All this started after Detroit beat Dallas, 39-31, to finish the 2006 regular season.

A few days after that game, in an interview with a Seattle radio station, Kitna ripped inside linebacker Bradie James and Newman.

"We definitely felt like Terence Newman was the best corner that they had, so we knew we needed to be careful with him," Kitna said. "But even with him, I mean, he's not [Seattle cornerback] Marcus Trufant in my opinion. He doesn't have that kind of ability. It wasn't like you were scared to throw at him, I guess."

The letter from the league was hung in front of Newman's locker before Thursday's practice.

Coach Wade Phillips, who said Newman talked to him about the letter, said he's not concerned about his players being unprofessional during the Lions game.

"It's just motivation, and that's OK," Phillips said.

Anderson's letter also said Newman was doing a disservice to the league and that he will be watched closely Sunday.

"I don't know anything about it," a smiling Newman said as he walked to a position meeting.

Excerpts of a letter from Ray Anderson, the NFL's executive vice president for football operations, to Cowboys cornerback Terence Newman:

Your comments were thoughtless and irresponsible in view of the negative impact such statements have on all of us in football. They are contrary to what the NFL stands for, and do a disservice to the League, your team and yourself.

The public's view of NFL players is essential to our continued success as the most popular sport in America, and your comments undermined the good that so many players have done in developing a positive image. You are among the privileged few able to represent the NFL to our youth and communities. Like it or not, you are a role model ... with all the responsibilities.

Be advised that your comments will now compel us to carefully monitor your activities in this weekend's Cowboys-Lions game. As you know, blatant fouls may subject a player not only to fines, but to suspension as well. So conduct yourself accordingly.

Yeah I'm not really sure why Newman came out and said that. I won't pick a side and debate the morality of him wanting to give an illegal hit. However regardless of your position, why not just keep it to yourself Newman? Now he's set himself up to be judged more harshly for any big hit he gives. What with the Dallas secondary already thin, we're going to need Newman for the rest of the season, for sure.

I can guaruntee, when Newman lays a big hit, he'll get fined, no matter how clean. It will look like intent to injure and the NFL will lay the smack down. Dumb on Newman to pull this shit.

He was trashtalking the same as Kitna, but went a bit too far without realizing it, IMO. I doubt he actually intended to make an illegal hit.
