Thailand beat Singapore to reach final of Southeast Asian Games

QUOTE

KORAT, Thailand (AFP) - Thailand beat Singapore 3-0 on Tuesday to progress to the SEA Games football final where they will face Myanmar -- confident of their eighth consecutive win in this tournament. In front of fanatical supporters, Thailand opened the scoring from a corner midway through the first half when Wuttichai Tatong headed in after Singapore goalkeeper Hassan Sunny failed to clear the ball. Both teams took time to settle at the beginning of the match and the Thai defence looked uncertain on several occasions when under pressure but Singapore could not fashion a clear goal-scoring opportunity. After the opener the Thais began to look more threatening, breaking powerfully from midfield and Singapore rarely threatened, unable to keep control of the ball for long periods and lacking a cutting edge. Just before half-time Thailand made it 2-0 after Singapore lost the ball near the halfway line, Anon Sangsanoi putting it past a despairing Sunny. As the crowd continued to pour into the stadium, Singapore emerged after the break with renewed determination but could not put the Thais under sustained pressure and as the second half wore on the seven-time defending champions again looked the more dangerous team, with more ideas. Thailand put the game beyond Singapore with less than a quarter of an hour to go when the dangerous Winothai Teeratep pulled the ball back for Prat Samakrat to score from close range. Thailand, who topped their group with nine points out of nine in this under-23 tournament, will face Myanmar in Friday's final after the unfancied side defeated Vietnam in the day's earlier semi-final 3-1 in a penalty shootout after the match ended in a 0-0 stalemate. Vietnam, who topped their group, could not find a way past Myanmar and only scored one of their spotkicks to crash out.
