So I have an idea. What about acquiring Kwame Brown? Maybe the Lakers would take Gordan Giricek, Jarron Collins and a young talent like C.J. Miles for him. I think he'd be perfect fit for the Jazz. But you guys are the experts, so what do you think? -- Tyler G.
Answer:
Tyler isn't the only reader wondering if the Jazz's porous defense can be fixed, or offering a suggestion how to do it.
Specifically, the Lakers are probably looking to trade Brown, who has been hurt since mid-November and continues to be one of the most disappointing No. 1 picks in NBA draft history.
Young Andrew Bynum is the Lakers' center of the future and, if L.A. could get something it needs for Brown, I'm guessing the Lakers would pull the trigger on a deal.
As the trade deadline approaches, Brown will have some value to other teams, too. As you suggested, he's a space-eating center who could help a size-challenged contender.
Another factor: His $9.075 million contract expires after the season so, if he didn't work out, he could be cut him and his new team would still get a nice dose of salary cap relief. First, league rules prohibit Miles from being traded until Jan. 1 because of he signed a contract just before the start of the season.
Second -- and I've talked about this many times -- teams are reluctant to make deals with other teams within the same division or, in this case, the same conference.
If the Lakers end up trading Brown, I'm guessing they will ship him to the Eastern Conference. Maybe to Chicago, New York or Charlotte. By doing so, the Lakers would make certain that Brown couldn't come back and help beat them in the race for playoff position or in a postseason series (prior to the Finals, at least).
Taking Tyler's question a step further, I heard from another "concerned fan" who asked if the Jazz should trade for a a shot-blocker at the center position, to complement Andrei Kirilenko? The fan suggested Andrew Bogut, Chris Kamen, Samuel Dalembert or Emeka Okafor as possible targets and asked if any of them might be available?
My thought?
No, none of them are available, at least for a price the Jazz would want to pay.
Dalembert might be a possibility, but only because the 76ers have a new general manager (Ed Stefanski) who might be willing to shake up the roster on a team that is plunging toward the lottery. But he's more likely to dangle veteran point guard Andre Miller as trade bait than a serviceable big man like Dalembert.

The proposed deal makes no sense for the Lakers, but trading Kwame at some point does. I think Charlotte is a real possibility because they've been looking for big man help all summer long. I like Walter Herrmann a lot because he's fundmentally sound and is a tough minded player. He hasn't received any playing time under Sam Vincent for some odd reason. Another player I like on their team is Matt Carroll. He can score the ball from all over the court and has a decent contract.

Yes he's a very solid role player who would compete every game for us. He can finish around the rim with either hand, has a nice mid-range game, and plays physical on defense. I think the only reason he's not playing in Charlotte is a language barrier. I read his English isn't very good, but I think LA would spend the money for a translator if they acquired him.
