Though he would have rather had Yao Ming reserve his harshest comments for the locker room, Rockets coach Rick Adelman said Yao's rebuke of the Rockets in Toronto and Philadelphia, when he called the Rockets among other things "soft" was "true."

"Everybody has a right to their opinion, and certainly Yao did," Adelman said. "I think he was right on in a lot of cases. From my standpoint, this is an 82-game schedule.

"At halftime of the Toronto game, things were pretty good. Everybody was happy. And in 72 minutes, it seemed like it all changed. There's warning signs. There's definitely signs in the way we played the second half in Toronto and came out against Philly. An alarm goes off there. But in this league, you can't be so high after a win and low after a loss.

"I'd rather see us handle those things in house, talk to each other in house. But I had no problem in him voicing his opinion. I have no trouble with what he said. It was true. We're going to have to work on it. If it fires us up, ask him some more tough questions."

Yao said he hoped the tough losses would lead to tougher play.

"We're trying to make the change, to change the team to winning." Yao said. "Make us be tougher. Every day is a new day; every game is a new game. We still have hope. It's a struggle, at this point. But the season is still only 20-something games old. We can still turn it up. We just need to do our jobs, play harder.

"Nobody would like to stay struggling. Nobody would like to lose. After that pain the last two games, I believe everybody will think about how we need to play the rest of our season. Those two games are painful, hopefully. The pain will get us tougher. I don't want to lose them for nothing."

Back in action

Rockets guard Tracy McGrady (ankle) and Rafer Alston (groin) returned to the floor, though both said they were still sore. Alston missed the Rockets' losses in Toronto and Philadelphia.

"It was pretty obvious in watching those two games," Rick Adelman said when asked what the Rockets missed with Alston out. "He's the best ballhandler we have. He gets down the court. He gets the ball in the right spot the easiest of all of our guards, understands what we're trying to do.

"And he's one of our better team defenders, too. He understands what we want to do defensively. He's just a solid player. We really missed him in those two games he didn't play. Organizing the club and getting us into things are probably the best things he does for us."

Getting into it

With the teams wearing throwback uniforms, guard Rafer Alston went a step further, hiking up his shorts to be throwback short shorts.

"That's for Allen Leavell, and (Lewis) Lloyd and Bobby Joe Reid, all those guys." Alston said.

Not really. This is just not Adelman's type of team at all. In fact, I don't know what coach would be good for this team.

Chuck Daly would be perfect for this team. He's great at keeping it simple and running the same play over and over again until a team makes an adjustment to stop it. Then he runs a counter play over and over again.

With Yao and TMac he would have two options to work with and run plays for them to succeed at putting the ball in the basket. Daly would also bring the toughness this team is missing.

I don't think he'd come out of retirement, but someone who could force this team to dump the ball into Yao on a consistent basis and get them to play defense would be the right coach.

Ruben Patterson was just waived by the Clippers. How about bringing him in to be the enforcer?

Signing Patterson would be a good idea, he had a great year in Milwaukee last year. However, he's got problems co-existing with teammates and has no outside game. Bonzi does what he does on offense, so it might be a bit redundant.

I'd rather we bring back Mike Harris if we were to do anything, but Adelman won't play him.
