When the Pats traded for Wes Welker in the offseason, most people assumed he was brought to New England to approximate the production Troy Brown had for years as a slot receiver. As it turns out, Welker hasn’t just approximated it, he’s about to shatter it. With nine more catches, Welker will set the Patriots franchise record for catches in a season, 101, set by Brown in 2001. Welker stands as just the fifth Patriot to ever go over 90 catches in a season. A look at the top 5:

    TROY BROWN

    Season: 2001

    Catches: 101

Team result: Pats come from out of nowhere to win first Super Bowl.

    TROY BROWN

    Season: 2002

    Catches: 97

Team result: With age and speed on defense a problem, Pats miss the playoffs.

    BEN COATES

    Season: 1994

    Catches: 96

Team result: First big year under Bill Parcells and Drew Bledsoe; Pats eventually lose to Bill Belichick’s Browns in the wild card round.

    TERRY GLENN

    Season: 1996

    Catches: 90

Team result: The rookie-record season isn’t enough to go all the way; Pats lose to Green Bay in the Super Bowl.

    WES WELKER

    Season: 2007

    Catches: 93

    Team result: ?

Will Wes get the record this week? If the Patriots are facing 40 mph winds, then you would think that Wes becomes more of a focal point of the offense since the wind will affect the deep ball more. Then again, the Jets will know that and may gameplan to try and shut Wes down. I said earlier in the season that, while this may be the most talented Patriot offense, it may not be the offense best suited for Foxboro in the winter.

We'll see this Sunday how well the offense does and if they'll be suited for the winter.
