Without that trade, we don't have Theo Ratliff's expiring contract in order to make the Garnett deal happen in the first place. That deal was never centered around Telfair, it was centered around the financial flexibility to make a big move in the future. Telfair was thrown in because Ainge has always liked him and figured it was worth taking a flyer on him - plus at the time, we needed a point guard. We had no clue Rondo would be available to us late in the first round like he was. That trade was pure gold.

QUOTE (mynetsforlife)

Wasn't it Randy Foye?

No, there's something else people always confuse.
Had we kept the #7 pick, we would have chose between Brandon Roy and Rudy Gay. Minnesota was fully aware that Portland made the Boston trade with the intention of drafting Roy at #7. Minnesota wanted Foye all along, but instead of taking him with the #6 pick and letting Portland get their guy at 7, they drafted Roy at 6 and worked a deal with Portland to get something extra from them. Both teams got the player they wanted, and Minnesota also got a 2nd rounder out of it.

Portland knew this and wanted Roy all along, so they chose Foye and forced Minnesotas hand in trading him to Portland

And to claim that trading Raef and Roy for Telfair and Ratlif is "pure gold" is lame. Ainge did that trade not knowing he could turn it around and help get Garnett, (keep in mind Jefferson was the main piece) at the time of the trade. Not one GM in the league would make that trade today knowing what Brandon Roy has become.

You never know exactly what a trade will do, or what player you will land with a pick (unless it's the #1 pick). But no matter how many time you say there was not a plan and it was just luck - there clearly was a plan. Trade for youth and picks to either keep or trade. That is exactly what happened and we are better off for it.
Thank you Danny.
