DEFINITIONS:

DNPE: Did not play enough for the number to be calculated

OAT: On Another Team for 2007-08

Real Rating: Player Rating / Player Minutes Played

Rating: This comprehensive and balanced statistic is continuously updated on ESPN. Theformula is:

    Points + Rebounds + 1.4*Assists + Steals + 1.4*Blocks - .7*Turnovers + # of Field Goals Made +1/2*# of 3-pointers Made - .8*# of Missed Field Goals - .8*# of Missed Free Throws + .25 *# of Free Throws Made

Coach's Relative Use of Player: Player Minutes Played/ Real Player Rating

The Coach's Relative Use of Player shows you who the coach favored and who he did not favor with his rotations. The higher the number, the more the player played relative to his performance. The numbers are supposed to be close together among the best 9 or 10 players on the team, because the minutes should be allocated approximately in proportion to the real player ratings. A good example of a player being very over used would be George Karl's use of Steve Blake in 2006-07. Blake did not produce nearly enough to justify his minutes.

The real rating concept is roughly similar to Hollinger's player efficiency ratings, except that it is much simpler. Hollinger's statistic has been criticized for beingso complex thatit does not necessarily reflect reality, on account of the numerous assumptions that are made, some of which are debatable. The ESPN rating, upon which my real player rating is based, is ironically put out by Hollinger's employer, ESPN. It is straightforward and understandable, yet very comprehensive and balanced, so my real player rating, even though it is easy to calculate,is most likely at least as good and probablya little better thanHollinger's player efficiency ratings, or any othercomprehensive statistic.

This table feature is great on this forum. Now I and anyone else can refer to it at any time to compare players on the Nuggets, and to see whether a player is playing better or worse than last year.

You can see here that Iverson is now doing slightly better than Carmelo Anthony, whereas last year Melo remained ahead of Iverson.

J.R. Smith is just as good as Linas Kleiza this year, even with all his problems, even though the Coach thinks otherwise.

Anthony Carter is being given too much playing time, but it's no whee near as bad as the Steve Blake obsession last year. LOL at how grossly over used Blake was.

SportsTwo Table Feature + Tremaine's Stats = Real Knowledge

is what we have going on here.

Don't miss how Iverson is about 10% better than last year, while Carmelo Anthony is about 10% worse than last year. Iverson really and truly wants to win a ring, there's no doubt about it. And Melo can and needs to play a little better, and the sooner the better.

To the extent I have time, I'm going to makecharts, (with only this season's numbers) for the best teams, like the Spurs, Suns, Lakers, and Celtics. Then we'll be able to compare Iverson/Anthony/Camby with other good players on other good teams.

I got curious so I just checked Steve Blake, who isnow on the Trailblazers. He's playing 4 minutes less a game and performing about 10% better than last season in a shorter amount of time. Even now, he's still overused to some extent, but it's no where near as crazy as it was last year. Blake's Coach's Relative Use number on the Blazers is 52.81, down a lot from the ridiculous 73.83 last year on the Nuggets. The Blazer's Coach Nate McMillan has done a fairly good job with Blake. Hell, he's done a good job with his team overall, as we saw last night.

I forgot to include last year Nuggets Andre Miller, Earl Boykins, Joe Smith, and Jamal Sampson, so I added them. Steve Blake was moved to the bottom because, and this was a little surprising even to me, Blake was dead last among those who are no longer on the team. Man was he ever overrated last year.

You can now see that it was worth it to trade away Andre Miller. Miller was 0.784, while Anthony Carter this year is not too far behind at 0.705, and Iverson is in the clouds at 1.012. Chucky Atkins, who is supposed to be the starting point guard, was 0.793 for the Grizzlies last year, so it is very possible he could be about as good as Andre Miller would be, contrary to what most Nuggets fans think.

    Great Job tremaine.

I was wondering, you think if J.R. Smith started at the 2 guard, and you put Iverson at PG, would you think their rating would go up?

I used to think that for sure and I still think that, but now I'm not totally sure, because Iverson is more outstanding than expected at the 2-guard and Smith is not quite as good as last year. If you put in my and yourlineup, Iverson would go down a little and Smith would go up, I just don't know by how much Smith would go up anymore, because this is kind of a tough year for him right now.J.R. Smith's turnovers are up from last year, but his assists are up to make up for it.His shooting accuracy is down buthe remains the best 3-point shooteron the Nuggets and the Nuggets have no hope in the playoffs unless they have 3-4 players ready to make threes.

Right now, at the very least, I would putJ.R. Smith in for more minutes because, as the all-knowing chart shows, Smith is not getting his share of minutes. Smith might only need more time on the court to get back to where he was last year before his knee injury. He might be rushing things too much in limited minutes right now.

I agree with that. But, even with Iverson playing great at the 2-guard, Maybe having him at point would be his assists up and get Carmelo even more in to the game. I was watching the Spurs vs. Nuggets game a few days ago, and I saw Iverson just take the ball up and shoot it, time and time again. I think, in my mind, for the Nuggets to win, Carmelo needs to score more, and Iverson to pass just a bit more. I mean, Iverson should average 25-9 and while I want Carmelo to average 29-5 rebounds. That would be ideal.

You are exactly correct. Putting Iverson at the point is like eatingvegetables. You might not like the taste but they are good for you over the long term. The only reason a little bit of doubt has come in my head about the wisdom of putting Iverson at the point and starting J.R. at the 2-spot is that Iverson has exploded while not playing the point, and it's not his fault that theoffense is so unstructured that his style of play isleaving Carmelo Anthony without enough shots. And Iverson gets just about as many assists whether or not he plays the point. He needs some plays to be able to get even more assists.

All along,I have been thinking that if you just put Iverson at the point, you could automatically pick up some structure (plays that arerun on a regular basis). But I don't knowto what extent that would happen. In any event, I still think thatputting Iverson at the point and starting J.R. would most likely but not for certain be a substantial gain for the Nuggets.

But much more important isfor the coaching staff to decide on the strategy and the plays for gettingA.I. and Melo to work together as a team within a team, and for getting those two to work with the rest of the team. If you don'tget someoffensive plays set up,Iverson will continue to run the offensealmost by himself whether or not he is playing the point, and there is no way A.I. on the fly can make sure that the offense makes use of all of the players who play. That is the coachingstaff's responsibility. So like I said in my recent game reports, don't blame Iverson for this mess, it's not his job to figure out how the offense as a whole should be run.

I just checked and there is no table script on this, but I think I can attach excel files, so that's what I'll do when I update the Nuggets real player ratings and report out real player ratings for top players on other teams. The table feature on the old sports2 was outstanding, but attaching the excel will work and will actually save me some time.
