Sparks set to fly between Arsenal and Rovers</p>

    <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'></p>

BLACKBURN, England (AFP) - Arsene Wenger and Mark Hughes will resume a rivalry that has become every bit as fierce as any of the various feuds that can blight relations between Premier League managers when their sides meet in the quarter-finals of the League Cup at Ewood Park Tuesday.

And while both bosses won't admit it, the chill between them means there is more at stake than simply a place in the last four of this competition.

The root of the conflict lies in the FA Cup semi-final of three seasons ago when Blackburn's strong-arm approach, as they sank to a 3-0 defeat, attracted widespread condemnation.

Hughes has accepted the Rovers side of that time were guilty of adopting an over-physical approach but has reacted angrily when Wenger has repeated the accusation following the teams' subsequent meetings.

The Frenchman's latest outburst came after the two sides played out a 1-1 draw in August in a game that saw seven yellow cards and one red, for Rovers' New Zealand international skipper Ryan Nelsen.

"We responded well to a team who were over-physical," said Wenger immediately after the clash.

"At times there was a desire for violence rather than commitment in some challenges and we dealt well with the problem."

That inevitably infuriated former Wales striker Hughes, who retorted: "It was a cheap shot. He was hiding behind those comments because his team were dominated. I don't think he was very gracious."

Blackburn's recent disciplinary problems - Nelsen was again sent off recently against Aston Villa while Australia's Brett Emerton was dismissed in the 5-3 weekend defeat at Wigan - would appear to suggest Rovers still have work to do to shake off a lingering reputation for disciplinary problems.

But a desire to overcome an worrying rash of defensive errors will occupy Hughes's thinking in the build up to the Cup tie.

The Rovers manager's policy is to play his strongest side in marked contrast to Wenger's preference for using the League Cup to give valuable experience to his latest crop of talented youngsters.

And having seen his side squander a point after a Roque Santa Cruz hat-trick wiped out a three-goal deficit at Wigan, Hughes will demand an immediate improvement against the Premier League leaders, who remained top of the table after a 1-0 win at home to London rivals Chelsea on Sunday.

"It is a huge game for everyone, we want to have the chance to win a cup, so the Carling (League) Cup and the FA Cup are tournaments where we want to do our best," admitted Santa Cruz. "We will do anything to get to the final."

Wenger is expected to include Theo Walcott in his starting line-up after the England winger missed the win over Chelsea with a knee problem but doubts hang over Lassana Diarra's participation.

The France midfielder has revealed his frustration at his lack of first team opportunities and his outburst would appear to leave Wenger with little option but to exclude the player.

"We're halfway through December, and I've decided: I want to leave Arsenal," Diarra complained. "The bottom line is the coach doesn't need me. When I signed for Arsenal I was made promises by the people who recruited me.

"But since the start of the season the only matches I've been involved in have been low-key and, to be honest, I'm getting fed up with it."</div></p>
