Scott Souza of the MetroWest Daily News is reporting that undrafted rookie forward Brandon Wallace is going to be released by the team:

QUOTE

WALTHAM - The feel-good story of Brandon Wallace making the Celtics after being signed as a free agent out of the draft has apparently come to an end.

Doc Rivers confirmed this morning that the Celtics will release the South Carolina product rather than reassign him to the Utah Flash of the NBDL. Wallace has been back in Boston for the past few weeks after suffering a carpal injury to his wrist.

The Celtics had a Dec. 20 deadline to release him or be required to pay him for the rest of the season.

“I told him this morning, Danny (Ainge) and I,” Rivers said. “We need (roster) flexibility. It was more that (than a knock on his potential). Great kid, though.”

Wallace signed his contract in the basement of the UNLV Cox Pavilion after a Celtics Summer League game. The contract was for two years with a partial guarantee. He beat out veteran Dahntay Jones for the 14th spot on the roster out of training camp.

The move leaves the Celtics with 13 players on the roster.

This is an interesting move that leaves you with two questions. First off, was this strictly a financial move? Wallace was set to make a little over $427,000 this season, but that salary is doubled due to the luxury tax. Did they feel his potential just wasn't worth the extra financial output? The second question that comes to mind is simply "what's next?" This is a team that could certainly use another center as well as a veteran backup point guard to Rajon Rondo. Does Danny Ainge have yet another trick up his sleeve? Stay tuned, folks.

I saw him in summer league/preseason and he looked like a useful bench player, especially on defense. Obviously he wasn't going to get much burn this year, but he will be on another NBA roster when he's healthy and down the road I expect him to make us sorry for waiving him. There was no pressure to waive the guy was there? We're down to 13 on the roster, I really doubt 500K takes much of a toll on the payroll.

It's actually closer to 854K, because of the luxury tax. But I do agree with you in a way. I like Wallace, and I thought he was worth hanging onto. He could very well be a low-risk, high-reward type of guy. He's extremely athletic, versatile, long, very active, quick, and can play some defense. I felt like he was a project worth taking a flyer on. With that said, I don't think there is a medium with him. I think he's either going to be the next Gerald Wallace or he's going to be the next D-League All-Star.

With that said, however, I trust Danny Ainge 100% in the talent evaluation department. If he didn't feel his upside was high enough to guarantee his rookie contract and spent extra luxury tax dollars on, then I'll go with it. I'm extremely interested to see what move(s) he tries to make as the season progresses. I think this year's trading deadline could be extremely active, and I think there's also a chance that players like Cassell or Stoudamire reach buyout agreements.

I don't see this team entering the playoffs with just 13 players. I'd be surprised if we exceeded the trading deadline with this exact roster. Something will happen. I don't know what it is, and Danny may not even know yet, but something will happen.

12 players on the active roster, just like in the regular season you can only have 12 active players on a given night. Nothing different. If we go out and bring in another veteran, we put Gabe Pruitt and Leon Powe on the inactive list come playoff time. Nothing different.
