Hitzfeld fuels speculation about Bayern future

QUOTE

MUNICH, Germany (AFP) - Bayern Munich coach Ottmar Hitzfeld on Tuesday fuelled speculation that he could be set to leave the Bavarian giants. Hitzfeld said he would begin negotiations in January to extend his contract which runs until June but revealed that he is keeping his options open. "I have agreed with Bayern that we will discuss the future in January," said Hitzfeld. "Bayern remains my priority: we're going to assess the situation and we'll see where we all are. I'll make my decision and will inform Bayern of it," added the German who took over from Felix Magath in February. The Austrian press have reported that Hitzfeld is being lined up to succeed Italian Giovanni Trapattoni as Salzburg coach at the end of the season. And Hitzfeld himself fueled speculation by stating that he had been contacted by the Swiss football federation to lead their team after Euro 2008. "There are a lot of rumours, I'm not getting drawn into that," Hitzfeld said ahead of his club's UEFA Cup tie against Greek club Aris on Wednesday. He added: "There are a lot of rumours, a lot of possibilities as well." Bayern are currently top of the Bundesliga but have taken just ten points in their last seven league matches with only four goals scored.
