I personally think that Jose Calderon is the most underrated guard in the NBA. I think he's absolutely a starting point guard, and I would say he's just as good - if not better - than a healthy T.J. Ford. With that said, if Ford is alright (let's hope he is) and is able to resume his professional career, what does Jose Calderon's future look like? He can go out there and get himself a lot of money and a bigger role on another team this summer in free agency. If he stays in Toronto, his role won't change and he'll still be splitting minutes with Ford (again, assuming and hoping he's OK). How high does Toronto bargain with Calderon? They'll surely have their hands full with competition in the free agent market, so at what point to they draw the line?
We need to keep him no matter what, especially with the recent uncertainty surrounding TJ Ford. I think he very well might be a better starter than Ford (although I still think TJ would benefit from a more structured offense). However, I thought the game against Boston showed why those two compliment each other so well. We really needed TJ's penetration and defense (he's not a great defender, but he's pesky and much better than Jose).
Calderon's high apg, as well as having a great Assist to TO ratio is pretty awesome. His offense has room to improve.
Colangelo said he will match anything that is offered to Calderon, so I think he will be staying. What makes the Raptors a good team is the duo of TJ and Calderon. They are different players, but they play so well together. I see that we lose and it's because we need both players to preform and help us win games. I think the fact that he is the most underrated guard in the NBA makes him even more valuable, so I know BC will stick with him. For me, I rather have Calderon as the future point guard of this team.
