We still have an Xbox as it is all my 9 year old needs, plus I can get all the games cheap and used.

What I need are some quick tips and tricks to be able to at least be competitive when he asks me to play one of the sports games. The games that I remember off the top of my head are Madden 06, NCAA March Madness 05, NBA Live 04 & 06, College Hoops 2k6 and NBA 2k6. I know that there is also 1 or 2 college football games, an arena football game, an NHL game, a MLB game and an old UEFA game.

I never get a chance to look at the manuals when I'm challenged to a game, so I have to spend half the time figuring out what all the buttons and thumbsticks do.

Why not play by yourself a couple of times? Then you won't need any tips or tricks; you'll be ready.

I don't have the time to do that. I could only do that after the kids are in bed and I'm not going play on the Xbox instead of watching NBA, NCAAB, NFL and NCAAF games.

Just find whatever team Calbert Cheaney is on and use him. You can't lose.

Practice when he goes to bed? [IMG]
sorry - had the page open for ages

I would just recommend playing the way you would like to see your team play. SO in basketball try to play fast and get inside - shots are way easier to make on video games when your close in. For soccer games, use through balls (might be Y but I'm not sure) as it just allows you to run onto the pass. Then when the goalie runs out to stop you, just tap the shoot button (could be [IMG] and you should slide it under him for an easy goal.

Sports games are difficult for old guys like you because of all the buttons you have to be able to use instinctually.

    1. Stick with the same game maker. If you have EA, play all EA stuff. The menus and controls will be similar and easier to pick up.

    2. Simplify. You don't need to use the "stiff arm" button, the "spin" button and so forth. Just find the speed burst or the juke and only use that.

    3. Call pass plays with only one or two receivers. You are not Tom Brady. You can't make four reads. One read and start running. Use a fast QB if possible and run if your guy isn't open.

    4. Use delay tactics to give yourself time to think. Find the "back in to the basket" button and use that time to figure out which button you need to hit to shoot. Call rollouts and you can watch the play develop slower and sneak a peek at the controller to find the button for the open receiver.

    5. College football is awesome. You can run the option! It's super fun and it's simple. No more confusing passing. Just cut it upfield or pitch. Pro football defenses have better AI. College basketball games also move slower and the shot clock is longer so you have more time to think.

    6. Sliders and options. These games are usually customizable. They have "basic" controls you can switch to and "sliders" to make the game play so you can be competitive.

After a while, you will get better at these games and not have to do all of these things, but these tips should make you better until that happens. Your kid will still destroy you, but maybe not as badly as he is now.

Madden against another human (let alone a kid) is nothing like real football, because I've found that the most effective defense in the game is Field Goal Block. Run it every play. Unless your kid audibles to a shot gun formation he'll get creamed every time because he won't get the pass off in time.

Wouldn't recommend that against a computer, though.

In Madden, off tackle runs are god. In 06, I'd pick the Eagles, so you can scramble with McNabb when things look bad.

What MLB game? If it's MVP baseball, let me know.

    LMAO

By asserting dominance in Madden cpaw will solidify himself as the alpha male, and instantly quell any imminent uprising.

In NBA live, it's way too easy to steal and block, especially in 04-06.

BTW, I'd smack all you guys in NBA Jam

ahh A Uefa game:P. Cpaw You've gone up a notch in my record. You are now at Notch 1.

Chingy's Idea is good and also just pick a fast team and have a playedr with lots of Shot power and Accuracy. Not too sure what year your Uefa game is so can't realy reccomend a team. But you never go wrong with: Arsenal, Man Utd, AC Milan, Inter Milan, Barcelona or Real Madrid:D

haha if I'm playing an opponent who can get rid of the ball in time, I usually run punt return to get more guys on defense, and use the return man to play FS myself.

I was a NFL2k5 guy, and just can't take Madden that seriously. Which is why I play like, and are allowed to get away with, this.
