If the mock drafts I'm seeing are close to reality, Chris Long will be picked in the 1st few selections....when he signs his 1st deal, his signing bonus alone will eclipse the total of all his fathers contracts combined....his father is a Hall of Famer....thats a major problem in my opinion....being picked early in the draft guarantees you massive amounts of bonus money before you prove anything....the league really needs to adopt a slotting system like the NBA uses for drafted rookies and cut these initial deals down to size....
Yeah, I thought about this too and I agree. It's really getting out of hand with the way it escalates yr to yr. Soon it might get to the point where someone picked first is getting 40-50M guranteed on a 100M dollar deal. That's crazy to think about. They need to think about this for next bargaining agreement or something.
They need an NBA caliber rookie scale... The NFL rookie contracts are insane and if it werent for the huge cap increases each year a lot of teams would be in trouble financially.
I wonder if the players union has enough balls to go against their agents and agree to something like this. In the long run it can help veterans if there are proper provisions for them.
A rookie slotting system wouold be great for the NFL. Not only would it end the ridiculous rookie hold-out, but it would reduce the number of vets getting cut to make way for those guys. Its good for the owners too as they don't have to invest so much in guys who haven't done a damn thing. The Union should push for that.
