Based on all the pre-season buzz, I expected the shot blocking and finishing ability I've seen from Sean. What I absolutely didn't expect was that he would have such a nice looking stroke and soft touch, especially since the word was that he was a late-comer to basketball (never played before HS, as I recall). I expected he would be another Rodman or Chris Dudley. No way. If his head stays on straight and he works in the off seasons, he will absolutely have at least a good offensive game in 2-3 years. What most impresses me, in no particular order: 1. He doesn't try to do too much, knows his limits, yet will surprise you once every 2-3 games by trying a left-handed finish or jump hook from the post, something you haven't seen before. 2. His releases, even when the shot is way off, look well-controlled and purposeful and speak well of his potential to attain accuracy with repetition. 3. He has a naturally "soft" jumper with plenty of backspin, great extension on his turnarounds in the lane, and excellent free throw form (especially for a big man). He should absolutely be a threat facing the basket from 16 feet and in. 4. He's showing increasing ability to catch difficult passes and he obviously knows what to do with them once he's within a (huge) step of the basket. 5. Even though he's not recorded many assists, he's made some surprisingly nice passes that either led to a foul or to an assist for another player. He's obviously way behind most players of his talent level in terms of basketball experience and the quality and variety of teaching to which he's been exposed, and he's having to do an awful lot of learning on the fly. But he seems to be a quick study and by Frank's own admission rarely makes the same mistake twice. His "basketball IQ" is not where it needs to be now, but his real IQ suggests it's just a matter of time before it gets there. His defensive abilities and instincts speak for themselves. I'm very excited to watch him develop and consider him, at present, the best reason to watch a Nets game.
He definitely has a nice touch when shooting the ball, especially on his free throws. As he grows more and more on the offensive end, his ability to knock down his fouls shots will be huge.
i thoought he'd be raw-er then boone and from what little i did see of him in BC.(my man jared Dudley), I didnt want Sean but man was i ever wrong. what's surprising to me is his post game, he wants the ball in the post no matter if he forces up a shot or gets it stripped, he doesn't lose confidence. i also didnt expect his shotblocking ability to be this good to the point where expecting him to get atleast 4 blocks a game. I love this kid, right now, i wouldnt trade him for gasol.
I'm with you Jizzy. I knew he would be good at blocking shots but I never knew it would translate so well to the pros. Sean's midrange game has been surprising, as is his desire to back down an opponent (we currently have zero players who can do that, mind you). Plus there's been a couple turn around jumpers at the top of the key that I've seen him hit that have given me hope that he'll be something special. Moreover, its that he doesn't shy away from taking these kinds of shots. I think if he's got the confidence to keep at it he'll really go far in his progression.
I liked his confidence in the post game interview last night. "you know, I'm just here to take on anybody in the NBA, it doesn't matter to me who it is. " and "this was a must win game? I didn't know that. I thought we was supposed to win them all!" or something along those lines.
I'm normally in Chicago, and I just got back to the area, so the only Nets games I've seen recently have been the last two - Washington and Milwaukee. What's amazing to me is 1) how much energy and toughness Sean and Boone bring when they're starting and 2) how many dumb, rookie mistakes they make when they're in the game. The second part is extremely exciting to me, because it implies that as the season goes on, they'll make those mistakes less and less often. A Kidd-Carter-Jefferson-Boone-Sean lineup could potentially be a very, very good defensive lineup, if the young kids develop and everyone stays healthy. It's been a while since I've felt optimistic about the direction of this team...
I posted this the other day. I really don't know what kind of range he can develop, but I'd love it if he could just consistently knock down a little 10 foot baseline fadeaway. Drew Gooden and Udonis Haslem have both developed this pretty nicely, and Williams has a nicer looking stroke than either of them. His release point is so high, it would be basically unstoppable and he can get it off at will (especially with Kidd and Carter being such excellent facilitators). Also, he is so quick off the floor that if a defender overcommits, he can be wrist deep in the rim before anyone has a chance to blink.
He needs to learn how to make things easy for himself. I've watched most every game and haven't seen him give one shot fake. That turnaround might someday be a nice weapon, but he if he wants to really become a threat he's going to have to work on his ball handling. His main advantage over opponents is his speed. He's gotta figure out how to put the ball on the floor, do it cogently and with confidence, and draw fouls. Not sort of squirm around and attempt a heavily contested shot. If he works on that and his jumper, he could score 20 a game easy.

Seriously, it's scary how good he's going to be when he learns how to play basketball.

That would be fun.
