Apparently, Giricek has been traded to Philadelphia along with a pick for Kyle Korver. Just read it on realgm.com
I just read it there, too. Since some members are picky about seeing their links....http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/12913177.html IMO not such a bad trade. Giricek and a 1st for Korver. Saves money, gets you a draft pick for Sixers. Gives Jazz that shooter they've needed.
I'm a little surprised Philly got a 1st rounder out of Utah, to go along with an expiring contract just for Korver. Does anybody know the conditions of the pick? Korver will fit in beautifully with Utah offensively, and with so many stars around him - including a stud point guard - he's going to get more open looks than he has his whole career in Philly. This also opens up the door for Thaddeus Young or Rodney Carney to step up and prove why they were first round picks. I like it for both sides. Philly saves a ton of money (Korver is owed roughly $20 million over the next 4 years while Giricek has $4 million coming off the books after this season) and lands a first round pick to bulk up the rebuilding process. You've got to love it for them. Plus Utah gets rid of a guy that doesn't want to be there, was in coach Sloan's doghouse, and brings in one of the better spot-up shooters in the game. I give the edge to Philly, but it's solid for Utah as well.
Good trade by both teams, but Utah might have overpaid for Korver. If all they wanted was a shooter they could have signed one for a lot cheaper than the money Korver is making.
To clarify the 1st rounder the Sixers got, it's the NY Pick we got in the Googs deal couple years back. Here's the details: <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>Utah receives a 2008 New York first-round pick (top 23 protected in 2008, top 22 protected in 2009 and unproteced in 2010) (Tom Gugliotta trade 021904) via Phoenix (Marbury trade) Phoenix receives a 2005 New York Knicks first-round pick. (010504 Marbury trade).</div> I understand why Utah does this trade talent wise, but the business part of it is surprising. They keep saying they want to save money to sign Deron and Millsap to long term deals, yet they trade away an expiring contract & a first rounder (cheap player in the future) for a long term contract which will take up money. Getting Korver is a great pick-up to have off the bench, which makes me wonder if this move might be setting up a bigger move. Utah has had offense all year long, but they've been lacking defense. They need a shotblocker, and Memo has been somewhat shut out of the offense this year, leaving him on the outside looking in IMO. Maybe by getting a deep threat like Korver will allow them to trade Memo before the deadline to acquire a shotblocker, well I sure hope they do or else this move is worthless.
I've liked kyle korver since he was drafted by the sixers. He hustles, plays with tons of heart, good team defender, and can knock down the 3 better than anyone. I think he'll fit in really well in utah and earn the money he's making on that big contract. I wasn't sure about this trade at first from the sixers standpoint, but hopefully carney and especially young will step it up and become the players everyone thought they would become.
