Right now the Pistons and Celtics are playing the best ball in the league; losing to one of them is no insult.

    Second, while I agree that VC/Kidd are not an optimal match, I think you get the most bang for the buck by trying to add depth instead of a starter. I think that Kidd/Carter/RJ and a frontcourt rotation of Krstic/Williams/Boone could be pretty effective (I'd have Krstic coming off the bench, BTW). I'm not sure how much long-term potential Boone has, but he'll be fine in the role that is set out for him; as I've said since before he was drafted, he makes a better net than he is a player, if you get me. But after that, what does this team have? Marcus Williams, Darryl Armstrong, Antoine Wright, Boki Nachbar, Magloire, Malik Allen, Jason Collins. How many of these guys would even be active if they were on the Pistons? The Celtics? The Spurs? The Suns? The Rockets? The Lakers? Memphis? Minnesota? You get the idea. That's where the improvement has to be. I'd start by dealing Magloire and his expiring contract for a shooter. I'd choose between Nachbar and Antoine and do the same with one of them, depending on whether you prefer all defense-no offense or vice versa. I'd love to ditch Malik Allen, but he is paid so little that you're not going to get anyone good back; besides, if you are able to deal Magloire you probably have to keep him anyway. I'd deal Marcus if there was any market for him, but alas.</div>
    yeah, teams are gonna take our junk and give us MORE value in return.

    value is in the eye of the beholder. An average, middling player may not be worth a three-year, $12 million contract to his current team, especially if that team has 14 or 15 players under contract for next year, but could be a huge improvement over the crap we have now--not to mention infinitely better than the sludge Rod Thorn typically signs in the off-season. A team could save $8 million by shipping that sort of guy for Magloire, plus making room for a second-round pick or unsigned or undrafted free agent. Someone like, for example, Rasual Butler, who will make roughly $3.5 million next year and has one additional year on his contract after that. DeShawn Stephenson. Charlie Bell. Willie Green. Those guys are overpaid, and their contracts are too long, but they are better than what we've got right now.

    Rasual Butler is available, BUT

    --he has had an awful year;

    --taking on his $3.5 million contract next season would mean the Nets would not be re-signing Nachbar. They're basically the same player.

    --He would sit for the rest of the season since Frank doesnt like playing guys who don't understand the Nets system.

    The ideal candidate for the Nets would be a backcourt shooter who understands the Nets' system. That won't be Billy Thomas, who has been relegated to being a practice player...and he won't last through Thursday. That's the day all non-guaranteed deals become permanent. (Same goes for Malik Allen and Darrell Armstrong...they can be dumped--or traded in salary dumps--before Monday.)

    well, you need depth. I foresee either Wright or Nachbar leaving--don't know which--and Butler is probably as good as, if not better than, any free agent the nets would pick up. But you're right about sitting the rest of the season.

    Billy Thomas . . . or Robert Hite, perhaps.
