I know some people rarely change their avatar while others change them frequently. What is it that motivates you to change your avatar or what would it take to get you to change yours? Are you more likely to change your signature or your avatar? On the other side, how long does it take you to recognize when someone changes their avatar? Do you ever get confused and go that sounds like X, but the avatar isn't right?
If I run across a picture that I really like, I might switch it up. But for now it's the High Ayatollah of Slamola, first NBA dunk contest winner, LARRY NANCE!
Pretty much whenever a new idea comes up, or I see something that I like. I never really associate my avatar as a representation of my identity (and therefore something that wouldn't vary), but more along the lines of a representation of current interests
If I find a good picture, I'd change it. Right now, I like Supa Johnny!, and it correctly represents me of a huge fan of Syracuse basketball. If I found a better Nets/SU avy, I'd change it...but right now, I like this one.

Whenever I find a cool pic or there's an upcoming event I'm interested in. For instance, Brandon Smith is in my avatar now because he is announcing at the Army AA game tomorrow. Waiting . . . hoping.

If i find something that looks cool or if for example my current Adebayor one was because i stumbled across it and liked It But with this being S2 my avatars are nearly always Arsenal or Plymouth Argyle.
