<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>The Warriors waived backup center DJ Mbenga on Sunday, freeing up a roster spot for a possible trade or free-agent signing and saving a little money in the process.

"(It's) flexibility to be able to make some decisions moving forward," Warriors vice president Chris Mullin said. "Leave some options open."

Golden State saved about $400,000 by cutting the seldom-used Mbenga, whose contract would have become guaranteed for the remainder of the season had he not cleared waivers by Thursday.

In a related move, 7-foot-2 rookie Kosta Perovic was called up from the NBA Development League to give the Warriors another practice body in the frontcourt, but it's their backcourt that appears most likely to be tweaked in the coming weeks.

The Warriors are looking to improve their team's passing and all-around savvy, and one option is signing Oakland native Gary Payton out of retirement to play for his hometown team.

Though questions surround Payton, 39, who hasn't played since last season, sources say there has been enough mutual interest on both sides to merit recent conservations, and Mullin didn't exactly dismiss the possibility.

"I mean, again, there's a lot of different scenarios we're going to look at, probably more guards and bigs than swings," Mullin said when asked directly about Payton.

Payton's agent, Aaron Goodwin, declined to comment.

Croshere returns: Forward Austin Croshere went through a full practice for the first time since his back flared up two weeks ago and anticipates being available to play tonight against the Spurs. Croshere has missed the last 10 games.

Quote of the day: A stomach virus kept rookie Brandan Wright from practicing just two days after he received his first NBA start.

"I think Al (Harrington) put something in his coffee," Nelson quipped.</div>

I'd love to see it happen!

I know Jason Williams has been discussed as a potential backup, but after reading this he sounds like damaged goods.

"Riley said point guard Jason Williams, who missed five consecutive games with a sprained left knee, was rusty. Williams missed his only shot -- a three-point attempt -- in his first game since Christmas.

''He hasn't even shot the ball,'' Riley said. ``We need some support. He needed to come in and try hard. He's off his game.''

CJ Watson got signed today. The kid can run, 90% free throw shooter too. A potential really nice signing to get some backup minutes at the 1

Seems like a solid move. He shoots 51% from the field, 40% from 3, 90% from FT line and hes the star of his team. Had a 42/8/8 (it went to double OT fwiw) game the last time he played. Reading some draftexpress articles about him it seems like hes not a pure PG but he plays very under control and is a nice floor general. Apparently has a beautiful shot too. I'd love it if he were a sharp shooter who can run the team adequately. Sounds like if he does turn out to be an NBA player it'll be like a Daniel Gibson, which is very nice off the bench for 8-12 mpg. Its only a 10 day contract so we can get him some run, see if he works out, and sign him or go in another direction.

Could be Kelenna part two. Didn't we sign Azu around this same time last year? I like how Mullin got in and signed him to a 10 day contract before other GMs make their cuts and start competing for D League players. This 10 day deal goes right over the January 10 deadline for guaranteed contracts but it was early enough to beat out the other teams for his services.

    Here's his D-League player profile:

I don't mean to sound like a hater... (okay maybe I do!) but any move that got rid of DJ Mbenga is an extremely good one. Hello Watson! As long as he doesn't play like Dfish I'm okay with that.
