Article title: Too Much Green Article description: Category: National Basketball Association Date added: Jan 7 2008, 01:10 PM Article starter: Universe <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>By Stephen Dyell Everywhere you look, you see green. No, it’s not springtime and we are definitely not in Cliff Robinson’s basement. I’m taking about the top team in the league, the Boston Celtics. Sure it’s great how well they are proving to everyone how dominating they are against every team at home but can we take a break to smell the roses or even have some information on other teams? You click ESPN and about 70% of the time, something on that page has to do with the Celtics. You can go a whole week before hearing something about Minnesota or Detroit but there is a day to day update of the Celtics from there haircuts to excessive swearing. Of course people are going to read it. It’s Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce finally winning again. I give them a small hand clap then look out West where Roy is leading his Blazers and Chris Paul is leading the Hornets without All-Star team-mates and yet, you can only catch an article on them once in awhile. Now the latest addition to ESPN cause is Glen ‘Baby’ Davis who isn’t anything special but because he plays beside Kevin and the gang, and can hit six or seve open shots, he is suddenly in the spotlight over other rookies. Heck, give the Spurs Glen Davis and see how many open shots he can get. Have they deserved it? Of course a team with such few losses that they could match the Bulls record setting feat years back but look what happened to the last team to be so concerned on the season rather than resting and building team chemistry. Yes, Golden State fans just smiled while Dallas fans winced but the truth is, Boston hasn’t proved anything yet other than a feel good story. From the constant ads on the television to constant updates on every sports site and rumour mill, we need a break from the green. It will be great when they finish the season with only seven loses and work there way to the goal of NBA champions but for now, can we please get a variety of basketball news rather than have our kids grow up in a Celtics-owned world before they even have one ring? Like it or not, the Celtics will slowly become the Lakers of the 90’s. Not necessarily with the three peat or even one ring; more along the lines of kids from Florida to Vancouver will all be Celtics fans since it’s being pushed on them so much. Is it too much to ask for a little bit of variety?</div>
Oh come on...they weren't on TV at all last year or the last few years for that matter. It's their time to shine.
Hey, I'm not hating on them. Like I said they deserve all the credit but when can you say too much. Now with Glen Davis getting attention, I think we can switch over to other teams even if the record isn't as great.
I don't think they get enough attention. A revived Boston Celtics franchise is just what the NBA needed, and not only are the Celtics dominating the NBA at the moment, but they're doing so with a very marketable team. It's the best thing that's happened to the league in the post-Jordan era. I do agree that a lot of deserving players and teams don't get enough attention though. Take Allen Iverson, for example. His 38 point, 8 assist night barely made Sportscenter as a footnote, whereas days before, Brandon Roy was being praised endlessly for his 20 pt, 6 rb performances. Another example is Chris Kaman vs. Andrew Bynum. Kaman's been putting up better numbers all year and consistently has more impressive outings, yet all they talk about is Bynum, because he's a few years younger. Maybe it has something to do with the media market they're in, maybe it has something to do with the media valuing potential over productivity, or maybe there's less thought put into the highlights than I'm giving ESPN credit for, but whatever the case is, the media attention is not fairly distributed in today's game at all. I'll agree with you on that point, just not particularly about the Celtics.
It just doesn't make any sense...of course they're going to talk about the team with the best record. Who's been making noise like Boston has been this season? They've been ****ing nobodies for the past 20 years.
I'm just saying Chris Paul is getting no love and he runs pretty much the entire team while three, yes three All-Stars aren't going to get wins? Of course they are. I just want to click ESPN or CBSsports and see something different rather than always Boston no matter what they do.
This was a great line from your article ... more along the lines of kids from Florida to Vancouver will all be Celtics fans since it’s being pushed on them so much. I can see the Miami Heat fans exchanging their Shaq jerseys for KG ones as we speak. Every team with success is going to get over hyped by the mainstream media. It's convenient, it's recognizable to the casual fan, and KG is a great character for the league to push. I do think the Celtics success benefits the overall league and having a trio of great players for a marquee franchise was needed to bring some life back into the NBA. I just hope the Lakers can get equally as good in a short period of time to face the Celtics in the Finals while Kobe & KG are still playing high-level basketball. Right now Boston is the mecca for professional teams. Redsox, Patriots, and Celtics could pull off the hat trick.
If there was a chowder eating contest between KG, Ray, Paul and Tom Brady, it would lead SportsCenter
Fine article. I remember in the days of Bird and Magic, it was Lakers/Celtics on TV all the time. It's the nature of the beast. The Celtics are the NBA's equivalent of the Yankees. They've won more championships and had more dynasties than any other team in the league. In a sense, they're the face of the NBA and the coverage isn't surprising. Compare to last season... I don't think you could have found the Celtics on national TV at all. So maybe it's evening out a little. The good news is the current Celtics team isn't sustainable for very long. They may have 3 all-stars, but they're all long in the tooth. They're not going to fall from the top as gracefully as the Lakers did, as they have no Kobe to build around once this big 3 are done.
