Just a question, why is Coby Karl even on the roster? I know he has a great story and everything, I respect him, but he just isn't that good as a basketball player. I just don't see what there is to like about him. He isn't very athletic, isn't very quick, isn't very strong, he doesn't seem to have a high ceiling. I don't know why he is even on our roster. Maybe we can sign him on the D-Fenders? Anyways, there are many players I would take over Karl. For an example, guys like Derrick Byars and Hassan Adams were both waived in the offseason, I would definetely take them over Karl
Good question Brian and I don't think anyone can answer that question. Obviously he's not the most talent player available and his upside is limited. Give credit to his agent for getting his client a chance to make the team and give Karl credit for putting himself in a position to get a guaranteed contract. He might not be the best guy, but he might be the right guy. His story is an inspiration for the Laker franchise and a constant reminder to the rest of the guys on the team. We have a lot of guys on this team who have gone through rough patches in their lives: Lamar Odom lost his son Derek Fisher's daughter had a life-threatening eye tumor Kobe Bryant's Colorado incident Kwame Brown's abused childhood upbringing and off court troubles Maybe having him around keeps these guys spirits up. Who knows? He did average over 20 PPG in the DLeague and was shooting the lights out, maybe he's better than people give him credit for.
I think he is on the team, because he is George Karl's son. Most 15th man players don't get PT anyway, and he'll at least bring the Lakers' publicity for 2 reasons, 1st reason being George Karl's son. 2nd reason surviving cancer and playing in the NBA.

I know the guy is like a 27 year old rookie. </div> He was on our summer league team 4 or 5 years ago. He stuck out to me because I was an avid fan of the NBDL when it first started, and Moon was in that league. That year he was on the Lakers summer league squad, he supposedly had some nasty dunk over Mike Dunleavy - which might not seem impresive now, but Dunleavy at the same had just came out of duke and was highly regarded. Unfortuantely, there is no footage of that game, only hearsay about that particular dunk, but the fact that it created so much buzz, you can only imagine it must have been sick. I remember Rambis talking about how impressed they were with Moon, and that they wanted to bring him into camp .. but for whatever reason, when that time came, they decided against it and let him go.
From his NBA Bio Participated in summer league play with the Utah Jazz and Los Angeles Lakers in July of 2002.
