<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>NEW YORK (Ticker) -- The NBA on Friday granted a game protest filed by the Miami Heat, the league's first upheld protest in over 25 years.

The Heat protested a scoring error in the final minute of their 117-111 overtime loss to the Atlanta Hawks on December 19 at Philips Arena.

The ruling will result in a replay of the final 51.9 seconds of the game's overtime period, with the Hawks owning a 114-111 lead.

The game will officially be finished prior to the next scheduled meeting between the teams on March 8 at Philips Arena. It is the league's first granted protest since December 14, 1982, when then-Commissioner Larry O'Brien upheld a ruling protest made by the San Antonio Spurs.

According to current Commissioner David Stern's ruling, the NBA on Friday found that the Hawks were "grossly negligent" in committing a scoring error against Heat center Shaquille O'Neal.

With 51.9 seconds remaining in overtime, the official scorer's table incorrectly assessed O'Neal with his sixth personal foul, disqualifying him from the contest.

It actually was the fifth foul committed by O'Neal, who was attributed with a foul late in the fourth quarter that was called against Heat forward Udonis Haslem.

Stern fined the Hawks $50,000, saying that the team's scoring table personnel failed to follow league rules and failed to respond effectively when made aware of the mistake.

"Because of this conduct by Atlanta's personnel, Miami suffered a clear competitive disadvantage," a league statement said. "O'Neal - the Heat's second leading scorer and rebounder that night - was removed from a one-point game with only 51.9 seconds remaining."</div>

This is ridiculous. Are they really gonna do that? That shouldn't be legal.

The $50,000 is okay, but replaying the game? No way.

Can we replay that Raps-Hawks game from last season, while we're at it?

That Hawks are the ones who should have protested this game.

    Why?

Miami should have been keeping track? This is one of those things where the coaches should have complained during the game. The Hawks are getting screwed here.

    How does that change anything?

Miami should have been checking, you don't let yourself be screwed. I'm just a fan but I keep track of the fouls my favorite team has, especially if its someone as important as Shaq.

If I were Miami I wouldn't want this game to be replayed, they probably won't make playoffs this year.

This is a dumb decision. Why start now?

Why not replay the last whatever of the Bulsl game, where Pavlovic was laying out of bounds with the ball but the referees didn't blow their whistle?

Oh wait, Stern is in cahoots with the referees, so the referees being blind as bats would never be a reason to replay a game.

The words mean the Heat said something to the scorers table and they were rejected. The Heat had no other recourse but to appeal

In my opinion, there's only one game that should really be re-played, and that was the Suns-Spurs game last year that got DONAUGHY'D

Could matter if the hawks lose, and miss the playoffs by one game.
