    <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>Los Angeles Times -
Now that their franchise-center-in-training will be taking at least an eight-week break, the Lakers are perilously thin in the middle.

Kwame Brown has started 178 games in his seven-year career, and newly anointed backup Ronny Turiaf is more of a power forward.

In an update provided by a team source, Chris Mihm is at least two weeks from returning, if not longer, from a sore right Achilles tendon.

Thus, the Lakers are sifting through the free-agent bin and coming up with such names as Chris Webber, P.J. Brown, and DJ Mbenga.

The Lakers were intrigued by Webber a year ago and have been in contact with his representatives. They think he fits the mold of a triangle-offense player -- good passer, good jump shot -- but are concerned about his physical condition.

Webber, who will be 35 in March, has not played since last season. He averaged 11.2 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 29.9 minutes in 61 games with Philadelphia and Detroit but did not re-sign with the Pistons after their playoff run.</div>

Lakers reach out to Webber and PJ Brown ..

The Lakers have 14 players under contract and can add one more if they wish. They have reached out to free agent Chris Webber and might contact P.J. Brown, each of whom are forward-center types who have not played this season.

"We're going to look at replacement players and if there is a way to get another big player that can help us win games," Kupchak said. "Can you replace Andrew? Of course not. The list is short on the kind of players that if you picked them up, they would play and help you win, but we'll look at it."

I'll go for Webber, Mihm and Kwame are both injury prone so signing both Brown and Webber won't be a bad idea, cut Karl.

Cutting Karl would be like trading Fish, it just seems a little amoral to me.

Why don't we try and sign a 2 man combo between Fortson/PJ Brown/Dale Davis????? Dale Davis is still on the market, he's a STRONG player who apparently is in shape. Why don't we at least look at him? I'd say our best duo would be Mbenga and Webber, but Webber would demand WAY too much money IMO.
