EL SEGUNDO - Kwame Brown knew the questions were coming, so he answered them before they were asked.

It had been two days since he was booed for a dismal performance in Thursday’s loss to Phoenix, so he broke the ice on the uncomfortable topic when he met reporters after practice Saturday.

“I let it effect my game a little bit,” Brown said. “They were panicking, reacting to losing Andrew (Bynum). As a professional, I can’t let it bother my game.”

Brown did not speak to the media after the game Thursday, when he invoked boos from the sellout crowd particularly after a forgettable sequence in which he missed a dunk and lost the ball trying to make a move in the paint. Brown had seven turnovers and five fouls in 25 minutes.

The Lakers did not practice Friday, so Brown presumably had time to reflect. He said he apologized to Kobe Bryant for his poor play and owned up to a performance he admitted was not acceptable.

“There’s no excuse for missed dunks,” he said. “I’ve got to make those.”

Brown also acknowledged he was taken aback by the fan reaction.

“I was a little disappointed by it,” he said. “Fans will be fans. My priority is my teammates. I can’t let it get to me.

The confidence wasn’t there. Once I started playing ‘hot potato’ it wasn’t there.”

Brown is depended on to fill the void left by injured center Bynum, who will be out for two months with a dislocated knee cap, while Brown still recovers from sprained knee and ankle injuries.

Several teammates defended him after Thursday’s game. Coach Phil Jackson said Saturday “we know how difficult an atmosphere it is” and that Brown will put it behind him.</div>

Call me crazy, but I think Kwame's going to come out with a chip on his shoulder monday. I hope he is very active on the boards, this team is behind him...the fans must get behind him and realize he is our man until Bynum is back...breaking him down won't do anything.

Kwame doesn't need to apologize. She needs to let her game do the talking. Come out tomorrow, play hard, have a nice game, and the fans will be behind her back again.

Brian, the whole "she" thing is kind of lame...

There was no right to boo him every time he touched the ball, true fans don't do that. Did I boo? Yeah, in the heat of the moment when he missed the dunk. I laughed when they booed him at first, but they went overboard by booing him every time he touched the ball. Like Kobe said, "if you're going to boo, stay home."

Did you believe that when they did that to Smush last year?

I think the fans have a right to boo him, I mean, that's why we have freedom of speech. Now, do I think it's right, not so much. Booing isn't going to help his confidence nor is it going to make him play any better.

As for the Smush thing last year....I think do actually the boos were deserved. I realize that's a slight double standard, but we had a perfectly serviceable guy backing him up in Farmar. Beyond that, you could tell Smush really didn't give a damn. He never played hard, his defense didn't exist, and he was basically a chucker on offense. At least Kwame is trying, even if he is doing a poor job. Plus, give the man a break, he's only played 10 games coming back from an injury, and beyond that, he's basically getting thrown into the fire and being forced to play a huge chunk of minutes, something he might not physically be ready for after being out for a month and a half.

And as for the "she" thing, it is pretty lame dude. Until you get out there and taking a pounding on a nightly basis, I don't think you have the right to call a 7', 270 lb man a she, regardless of how poorly he's playing.

Wow, honestly...did they boo Smush last year? The last time I remember fans booing was when they booed Kobe, opening night.
