<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>Rod Thorn said his team never got involved in the pursuit of Pau Gasol, who was sent to the Lakers yesterday for a promising rookie point guard the Grizzlies didn't need (Jarvis Crittenton), two draft picks that figure to be in the mid-20s, and expiring contracts.

"They've been shopping him for a while. They were looking to clear cap space and (get) draft picks," Thorn said of Memphis. "In the short term, it really strengthens the Lakers."

The Nets didn't have the salaries to get up to Gasol's $13.7 million. The Grizzlies have no interest in Vince Carter ($13M), and even if the Nets were going to sacrifice one of their three youngest players, they couldn't put together enough contracts to match that of the Memphis center.</div>

Magloire 4 million dollar expiring contract
Nachbar 2.5 million dollar expiring contract
    Wright 1.68 million expiring contract
    Armstrong 1.2 million expiring contract
    Allen 1 million expiring contract

A first round pick + Sean Williams

Ummm...Didn't the Nets have the pieces? Losing those bench players is not that big of a loss, they were replaceable. Sign a guy like Bobby Jones to replace Wright. And then get Navarro + Swift for Collins.

    Kidd/M.Williams
    Carter/Navarro
    Jefferson/Jones
    Gasol/Swift
    Krstic/Boone

And when you read "what?" in the title, this is how it sounds like:

Kwame Brown is one player...they don't have roster room for six players...also would've needed to send Mwill too making it 7 players.
We wouldn't have any bench...wouldnt have worked. Thats the type of deal that the Knicks made to get into salary cap hell.

Couldn't they just waive Armstrong, Allen and Magloire? They didn't have to keep them on the roster. And I don't think Marcus would have needed to be added. And those bench players were replaceable. It's really just the backup SG and SF positions that would need replacing. Sign someone like Bobby Jones to replace Wright.

Also, if Thorn was still looking to trade Kidd couldn't he have come up with some 3 way deal where the Nets could have landed Gasol and a starting type PG.

I'm not really sure how the rules and restrictions would apply in this type of deal but what about a 3 way deal with Dallas where the Nets would get Terry and Gasol and the Mavs sign and trade Van Horn with a big expiring contract and send him over to the Grizzlies along with Sean Williams and a Mavs and Nets pick. Nets could also send out Magloire, Collins Wright and whoever to get some bench help in Diop and Stackhouse.

    Some kind of lineup like:

    Terry/M.Williams
    Carter/Stackhouse
    Jefferson/Nachbar
    Gasol/Boone
    Diop/Krstic

You guys would have to have given up way too much for this to work and you'd have been left with nothing. Plus, what would have been the point? The Nets are going nowhere fast, and if they trade Kidd, I'd think they're going to go into rebuilding mode. Plus, three max contracts on one team? Have fun in salary cap hell.

I'm really hoping that Lakers pick turns out to be someone ground breaking like the next MJ or something.
