<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Run BJM @ Feb 4 2008, 01:19 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}></div><div class='quotemain'>I'm a casual football fan and I think this is the best superbowl I've ever seen. Granted I'm only 17 so I haven't really seen that many but even though it was low scoring it was extremely fun to watch. What a great game with a spectacular ending.

You're right though Eli Manning does suck ass but they didn't trade away a ton of picks to get him like you said. This Giants team is really based on their pass rush. The pass rush is fantastic (you never see Brady get hit as much as he did tonight) and it makes the rest of the defense a lot better. Obviously it knocks the other team out of their rhythm and gets the QB to throw bad passes and turn it over. On offense they have a bruising running game with Jacobs and Bradshaw. Plaxico has been a great reciever all season and hes a huge mismatch problem for DBs. Eli isn't very good but hes also not too bad. Not a star by any means IMO but when the Giants went on that great run toward the end of the season he wasn't turning it over, and as long as he didn't eff it up the defense, running game, and Plaxico would win the games. Also the rest of their receiving core is very solid with Smith, Toomer, and Boss. This isn't even including Shockey who's a very good TE.</div>

Well, overall though Eli had a pretty nice game in the Superbowl. The interception wasn't his fault, and after calculating his true QB rating (me not counting the INT, then getting Adjusted Yards per pass and converting it to QB rating), it should be around 115. Props to the kid.

Eli had a helluva game, which capped off a great playoffs. The running game was shut down tonight. Plax was kept in check with double-coverage. The receivers were dropping passes (including one brutal drop by Steve Smith that led to an interception). Yet, Eli still managed to manufacture two crucial fourth quarter drives and throw 2 clutch TD passes. We won this game because of our defense and Eli Manning.

I don't know what this means for Eli's career outlook. I've always thought he's had a lot of potential, that was plagued by inconsistency and mental mistakes. He cut down on those the last 4 games and got slapped with the "game manager" tag. This game should pretty much dispel that myth. I don't know if he'll ever be "Peyton" good, but he's definitely a franchise QB. And I'm still very optimistic about him.

Well, most of this game was boring, and extremely lame. But I decided to watch it for the last 2 minutes...and that last minute was probably the most exciting minute of football I've ever seen. Hell, it was the only exciting football I've ever seen.

Man even for a defensive game I don't know how a casual fan could find it boring. I'm a cowboys fan and couldn't peel away from the game. The Giants were up against such a force that every time they turned the ball over, or gave up a first down I kind of felt that they were already unraveling. Every time they converted on 3rd down, held the Patriots on third down, and sacked Manning I thought that they were still holding on to that slim chance of the upset. Really, the slightest changes in action became huge for either team, and the entire game felt like the last 2 minutes of the 4th.

That's because you are a football fan.

These guys aren't even casual fans. They don't watch or follow the NFL.

When you think about it, it's confusing and has very little actual game action. If you didn't grow up with it as at least part of your life, you are unlikely to love the game.

Did you ever watch the Grey Cup? That's football. Were you rivited even if it was a great game? I'd rather watch the Food Network.

Anyone else just happy the Patriots lost?

They sorta remind me of the Spurs, in the way that everyone's on their jocks. And in the way they won too many championships, and you hear about them more than Britney.

I'm glad they didn't go undefeated. Then we woulda had some lame Sportcenters for the next 2 weeks (lamer than usual).

This game was boring as hell. It was better than a blowout but still the most overrated day in sports culture imo.

I stopped following football after the 1988-89 season (although I've watched a handful of games since then, and probably attended around a dozen college games in the early 90s). That season, it seemed like every game came down to a last-minute field-goal attempt. I'm not making that up. I think the Vikings that year had 13 of their 16 games decided on the last possession. Some people might find that exciting, but to be it just crystalized how utterly random the NFL is. I mean, why play the game at all? Just flip a coin to see who has the ball last, and then see if they can kick a field goal. Half the players get hurt; team records are manipulated through the strength of schedule; and there's only about 20 minutes of game action in a three-hour broadcast. It's just BORING and RANDOM. Just because the crowd is drunk and is worked into a frenzy doesn't change that. Three-quarters of the players are mutant trolls from the planet Nebulon; some are so ridiculously heavy that they actually break their ankles just running down the field (and yes, I've seen it).

Now that I live in a place where life centers around football and religion, and everyone owns a dog and a gun, I couldn't feel more out of place.

i thought it was a decent game. i was impressed with how the Giants where able to get at Brady.

having said that, i'd enjoying watching a good pitchers duel or a 2-1 hockey game if it is played at a good pace.

Depends. If its a choice between a scrappy non-defensive 41-32 NFL game or a 18-15 five nations game with no tries, all penalites... Id be going with the NFL. Its all a case of who is playing and whether defense is a focus.

Thats why everyone who didnt really care too much for Rugby where I was working at the time made sure they caught the Fijian games. All scoring, no D.

I mean its natural to think that way about all sports. Who would you rather watch the Spurs or the Suns? hmmm?

Well, its highly debatable. Soccer is great sport when your community has no American football presence.

The NFL gives you everything that soccer can... and much more. In fact, the NFL has a use for soccer players in a specialized role - they make them the field goal kickers, punters, and kickoff specialists.

    I'll put it as this:

If you were a Giants fan, you thought this game was amazing.

If you were against the Pats, you thought this game was amazing or above average.

If you are just a general fan who loves seeing big hits and touchdowns, this game was average to below average.

If you don't watch football, you'd have a better time watching the Family Guy re-runs on Global.

    Just my two cents.

You need to have some appreciation for the game of football to enjoy the first half. Its like those of us who can watch a defensive battle between the Spurs and Pistons entertaining. There's no way in hell that appeals to casual fans, mainly because they can't understand or appreciate the quality D being played.

And for the person that mentioned the World Cup, that's not even the best quality soccer you can find.

    Where are you from?

I just found the game sloppy for being a Superbowl. You could have been away for 3 1/2 quarters and not missed much.

This is all from an offensive linemen though aha.
