He is a tall, lanky pocket passer who, if anything, will be a late bloomer-- which is a good thing. Hasn't yet grown into his frame. Needs to add weight and bulk to withstand hits on a consistent basis. He's an adequate athlete, but generally is a dropback passer who needs to be protected and on time to excel. Has the arm to make all the necessary throws (including downfield and outside the numbers) when his feet are set and he's balanced. Shows a whip-like, quick delivery and the ability to change ball speeds. Most kids who are tall and have not grown into their body yet do not get rid of the ball as quickly as he can. Flashes good touch on the deep ball. Throws effectively to either side, with good zip on short and intermediate passes, when on the move. Can be very accurate when his feet are under him. Shows the RPMs to fit the ball into tight spots underneath. Has ideal height for scanning the field, but takes off too soon when he feels pressure--and he isn't a scrambler. Needs to stand in the pocket and keep his eyes downfield before moving around. Must improve his patience in the pocket, perhaps more than anything else. Has inconsistent footwork and can be offbeat, which affects his accuracy and zip. Too often delivers off his back foot, causing his deep ball to sail. McCarron shows some nice intangibles, toughness and intriguing pocket-passer qualities, but he isn't nearly a finished product. He is a guy that in two years and time in the weightroom could be outstanding.</font></td> </tr> <tr height="17" bgcolor="#c5c5c5"> <td><font face="verdana" size="1"><u>Past Articles and Updates</u></font></td> </tr> <tr> <td><font face="verdana" size="1"> Bama gets some early four-star commitments | RealFootball365.com (6/7/08) ESPN RISE Announces 2008 ELITE 11 Quarterback Field | ESPN.com (7/15/08)</font></td> </tr> </table> </body> </html>

ESPN RISE Announces 2008 ELITE 11 Quarterback Field <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>A.J. McCarron, 6-4, 190 lbs., Mobile (Ala.) St. Paul's One of the top quarterbacks to emerge in Alabama in the past five to 10 years. A prolific and productive pocket passer with a strong arm and great decision-making ability who led his team to a state title last fall. An underrated athlete who possesses great upside as he continues to fill out his 6-4 frame. Impressed evaluators at the Las Vegas EA SPORTS Elite 11 regional camp by showing good poise, accuracy and consistency. Threw for nearly 2,000 yards and 25 TDs as a sophomore, and has thrown for a combined 51 touchdowns versus just seven interceptions in his two varsity seasons as a starter. Is just the fourth quarterback out of Alabama to make the Elite 11 in its 10 years, and hopes to join past notables like Brodie Croyle and JaMarcus Russell in the NFL someday. Committed to Alabama in May over offers from the likes of Auburn, FSU, Miami, Oklahoma and Tennessee. 2007 Stats: Hit 145 of 232 passes for 2,532 yards with 26 TDs and just three interceptions.</div>
Several quarterbacks have big days to open Elite 11 | ESPN <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>Two other players Martin and fellow QBs coach Matt James raved about were Eugene Smith (Miramar, Fla.) and A.J. McCarron (Mobile, Ala./St. Paul's Episcopal). The 6-3, 180-pound Smith doesn't say a whole lot, but his play on the field speaks volumes for him. "Eugene really understands the game," Martin said. "I love the tempo he plays with. He never rushes anything and is always under control. He threw the ball very well today and you can tell he still has a lot left in his tank." McCarron, at 6-4, 180 pounds, reminds us a lot of former Elite 11 and Alabama QB Brodie Croyle. Like Croyle, McCarron has that shaggy brown hair and same live arm. He has one of the quickest releases in the camp, is very light on his feet and got a lot better as the day went on. "I thought he improved more from the start of the workout to the end than anyone else I saw," James said. "He has a lot of physical tools but mentally, you could tell he was starting to understand things more. When the game slows down for him, he's really going to make a big jump."</div>
