He threw for 1,597 yards and 21 touchdowns last year. In terms of his recruitment, he has a top five of Auburn, Boston College, Flordia State, LSU, and Michigan. Smith is an explosive athlete who can beat the defense with both his legs and his arm. He has above average footwork and possesses good pocket presence. He does throw a very good ball with little wasted motion, but his delivery looks somewhat awkward. He has good vision downfield and can throw on the run. Not the fastest of the dual-threat QB's, but is still very dangerous on the ground.</font></td> </tr> </table> </body> </html>
Michigan's recruiting heats up in Florida <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>QB Eugene Smith, Miramar High, 6-3/180/4.60: Smith is just the kind dual-threat signal-caller Rich Rodriguez covets. He is a threat to go the distance whenever he scrambles, but is equally dangerous through the air. His passing accuracy and ability to read defenses distinguishes him from the stereotypical "running quarterback." As a junior he passed for 1,597 yards, completing 70-of-115, with 21 touchdowns and only three interceptions. He holds offers from all three Florida powers and a host of other big-time programs, but the Wolverines are definitely a factor in the race for his services.</div>
Smith has been invited to the prestigious Elite 11 Camp held from July 21-24 in Southern California. He is the 5th selection so far. The others are: Matt Barkley (USC), Zach Mettenberger (UGA), Aaron Murray (UGA), and Tom Savage (Rutgers). <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>This will be the 10th year of the Elite 11, which has developed into the premier quarterback event in the nation. The Elite 11 is a competition designed to give the best high school quarterbacks in the nation some top-level schooling by the best in the business. Held in Southern California from July 21-24 this year, the Elite 11 will actually feature 12 of the best young high school quarterbacks competing amongst themselves and also receiving tutelage from top college counselors as well as the Elite 11 coaching staff.</div>
Also of note, Eugene named a top 5 yesterday of Florida State, Boston College, LSU, Louisville, and South Florida.
Football recruiting battles heating up | Miami Herald <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>Miramar's Eugene Smith, South Florida's top quarterback prospect, said he is considering five schools -- FSU, USF, LSU, Louisville and Michigan. UM, deep in young QBs, hasn't offered, and though the Gators offered, ``They've recruited other quarterbacks, and I don't want to be set back.''</div>
Summer camps help athletes make choices | Miami Herald <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>Miramar quarterback Eugene Smith has everyone from Boston College to Michigan, Louisville, Clemson and USF on his list. For Smith, who will head to California in July for the Elite 11 Quarterback event, the choice on where to attend college might not come until late fall or around signing day. Many believe he has the chance to break many area passing and total offense records this coming season. ''I'm excited about the opportunity to be the first Broward quarterback ever to appear in the Elite 11,'' Smith said. ``But the best part about the recruiting process is getting a chance to visit the schools and see what they have.''</div>
Making changes for Canes | Miami Herald <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>UM hasn't pursued Miramar's Eugene Smith, South Florida's best Class of 2009 quarterback, mostly because it has four young quarterbacks. But the Canes already are showing a strong interest in Miami Central junior-to-be quarterback Jeffrey Godfrey, his father said. Although A.J. Highsmith, Alonzo's son, said he will enter UM next year as a quarterback, he eventually could play defensive back. . . . With Minnesota cutting Kyle Wright last week, UM's top 2007 quarterback and biggest 2007 sack producer ( Vegas Franklin) are without NFL jobs.</div>
ESPN RISE Announces 2008 ELITE 11 Quarterback Field <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>Eugene Smith, 6-3, 182 lbs., Miramar (Fla.) One of the top natural passers ever to emerge from talent-rich South Florida. A true pocket passer with a strong and accurate arm. Earned second team all-state honors and Broward County Offensive Player of the Year honors last fall despite missing three games. Impressed at both the Gainesville and Miami NIKE Camps in April, taking home camp QB MVP honors in South Florida and matching Murray throw-for-throw in Gainesville. Was an honorable mention all-county pick as a sophomore, throwing for 1,108 yards and totaling 11 TDs while splitting time, and was very impressive as a underclassman at the '07 Miami Nike Camp. Is the 15th Florida QB to make the Elite 11 in its 10 years, and the first ever out of Broward County. Strongly considering Boston College, South Florida, Florida State, LSU and Louisville out of more than 30 offers. 2007 Stats: Passed for 2,222 yards and 25 TDs with just three interceptions while rushing for seven more scores in just seven full games.</div>
Elite 11 Day One: Every's Top Six Performers | rivals.com <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>Eugene Smith, 6-3, 182, DQB, Miramar (FL) Miramar Assets: He has a very quick release and real zip on his short and intermediate passes. What was most impressive on Monday: Has really improved on his accuracy from his previous two camps at Miami and Gainesville. On the Hoof: Smith is the leanest of all the competitors. His body is built like a basketball shooting guard, similar to that of A.D. McPherson out of high school. Conclusion: Currently the only uncommitted quarterback competing at the Elite11. Since he is one of the few top-rated quarterbacks yet to make up his mind, I expect his recruiting to really become a heated battle.</div>
Several quarterbacks have big days to open Elite 11 | ESPN <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>Two other players Martin and fellow QBs coach Matt James raved about were Eugene Smith (Miramar, Fla.) and A.J. McCarron (Mobile, Ala./St. Paul's Episcopal). The 6-3, 180-pound Smith doesn't say a whole lot, but his play on the field speaks volumes for him. "Eugene really understands the game," Martin said. "I love the tempo he plays with. He never rushes anything and is always under control. He threw the ball very well today and you can tell he still has a lot left in his tank." McCarron, at 6-4, 180 pounds, reminds us a lot of former Elite 11 and Alabama QB Brodie Croyle. Like Croyle, McCarron has that shaggy brown hair and same live arm. He has one of the quickest releases in the camp, is very light on his feet and got a lot better as the day went on. "I thought he improved more from the start of the workout to the end than anyone else I saw," James said. "He has a lot of physical tools but mentally, you could tell he was starting to understand things more. When the game slows down for him, he's really going to make a big jump."</div>
