"Now I think it's pretty much a done deal," Stackhouse told The Associated Press. Stackhouse added that he may be able to rejoin Dallas within 30 days, an indication the Nets would buy out his contract. "I feel great. I get 30 days to rest, then I'll be right back," he said. "I ain't going nowhere."</div>
Whats wrong with what he said? The Mavs clearly told him ahead of time, hes not disrespecting the Nets. If anything, he gets extra cash now.
No surprise here, I didn't think a veteran like Stackhouse would stay on a New Jersey team that pretty much has no chance of competing.

Should we be paying for Stackhouse to play for the Mavs? Basically would have traded Kidd, Stackhouse and Wright for Harris, expirings and 2 1st rounders. Something wrong there.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Petey @ Feb 13 2008, 05:58 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}></div><div class='quotemain'><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Jizzy @ Feb 13 2008, 05:52 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}></div><div class='quotemain'>f him. buy him out for a penny</div> ... more money is better, not the other way around. -Petey </div> I think it is the other way around. The amount of the buyout is spread out over the remaining years left on the contract. So if a player is bought out for 3 million and has 3 years left on their contract, then that would mean a 1 million hit a year on the cap for the team. Anyone can confirm this?
I think the figures are being worked on. That's the thing keeping it off Nba.com. I think Thorn wants Cuban to pay Stack the MLE he still has, thus reducing the buyout figure. I don't think Thorn is negotiating with Stack's agent, it's with Cuban. The amount of the buyout figure will be the remaining salary minus how much of the MLE Cuban will pay him this year. Nets of course want Cuban to empty the MLE what about 6 million, minus the 16 million remaining, that's 10 million, so 5 million hits the cap in each of the following 2 seasons.
Or perhaps we can try to involve another team and Stackhouse to them for an expiring contract/prospect....(unlikely though)
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>60. How do buy-outs affect a team's salary cap? The agreed-upon buy-out amount (see question number 59) is included in the team salary instead of the salary called for in the contract. If the player had more than one season left on his contract, then the buy-out money is distributed among those seasons in proportion to the original salary. For example, say a player had three seasons remaining on his contract, with salaries of $10 million, $11 million and $12 million. The player and team agree to a buyout of $15 million. The $15 million is therefore charged to the team salary over the three seasons. Since the original contract had $33 million left to be paid, and $10 million is 30.3% of $33 million, 30.3% of the $15 million buyout, or $4.545 million, is included in the team salary in the first season following the buyout. Likewise, 33.33% of $15 million, or $5 million, is included in the team salary in the second season, and 36.36% of $15 million, or $5.455 million, is included in the team salary in the third season. The distribution of the buy-out money is a matter of individual negotiation. Changing the number of years in which the money is paid does not change the number of years in which the team's team salary is charged. In the above example in which the player's contract is bought out with three seasons remaining, the buyout amount is always charged to the team salary over three seasons. It does not matter if the player is actually paid in a lump sum or over 20 years (a spread provision).</div>

Kwame goes away after this season. Our only saving grace is if he buys him out for a small amount. The buyout amount is what counts towards the cap.

Prorated for this season would be roughly $3mm this season plus $6mm the next 2 years. So Nets can buy him out for the roughly $20mm left minus the $15mm Cuban can sign him for. So that's a $5mm buyout, which would result in about a $2mm hit a year to our cap over the next 2 seasons. I can live with that if that's what it is. Probably why we got 2 #1s.
