<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>NEW ORLEANS -- Nets president Rod Thorn said Friday he has no side deal with Mavericks swingman Jerry Stackhouse, an illegal arrangement that could put a potential Jason Kidd-to-Dallas trade in jeopardy...

Thorn was surprised the deal was blocked, saying George had asked to be traded earlier in the season. George used his "early Bird rights" in rejecting the trade, a right given only to players on a second one-year deal that gives them a chance to sign their next contract for more than the salary cap allows. Those rights don't carry over if traded.

"Allegedly he had asked to be traded a couple of weeks before. Those rights were not an issue when he asked to be traded," Thorn said. "Dallas felt that it was not an issue. Why it became an issue I'm not sure. Obviously Bird rights were not an issue at that time."</div>

No. Everyone expects him to lie! His lie is endorsed by the NBA and is the expected and correct course of action.

Stackhouse told the truth to the media and he looks like the world's biggest idiot right now.

Everyone except Stromile Swift knew Stackhouse would be back with the Mavs.

THANK YOU. THANK YOU. THANK YOU.

In all honesty why do people really care? Even if we would assume that Stackhouse is an issue, lets go along with the plan and proceed with schedule. If anyone should get in our way, lets sue them (Two NBA franchises and the players association mind you) and win.

Seriously every sports writer wrote that Stackhouse was gonna be bought out and would then be resigned in 30 days before Stack said anything at all. Really what's the problem with him being honest about it...

I think it's illegal for Thorn to negotiate a buyout with Stackhouse before he's traded.

    That's what Thorn is denying.

Oooooh, I see. Well then, if he sees there was no arrangement made, I believe him 100% [IMG]

I'm sure Thorn is telling the truth . . . technically. The negotiations probably went something like this:

Thorn: Stackhouse is earning 6.75M. His salary would help get you to the threshhold you need to send back.

Cuban: We'd hate to lose Stackhouse. We need his toughness and veteran poise. And he signed here because he thought he would have a chance to win a championship.

Thorn: Well we're not set on keeping him, especially if he doesn't want to play for us. We might be able to arrange a buyout with him. You still have your MLE to try to get him back.

    Cuban: That might work.

Thorn: If he were willing to come back for the MLE, it would cost us around $3M, of course.

Cuban: That's no problem, we can throw that in as cash in the deal.

    Thorn: Okay, deal.

    Cuban: Deal.

Cuban then informs Schwartz of the deal with the representation that NJ is willing to buyout Stackhouse if he doesn't want to play for them and that the Mavs would be willing to use their MLE to resign him if he was willing to wait 30 days. Schwartz tells Stack, Stack says "sure".

There was no pre-negotiated buyout. Thorn never speaks to Schwartz about Stackhouse. There was no firm agreement that there would be a buyout. There was ample use of terms like "if", "might", "could", "try", etc., all making it contingent enough that it could never be viewed as a quid pro quo or true exchange of consideration regardless of the figurative winks and nods that made it essentially just that.

Except Stackhouse's ego compels him to shoot his mouth off to the press so he's not perceived as some garbage filler that a championship contender was so willing to readily jetison. And that wrecks the appearance of propriety, which is all that matters, afterall.

Speaking of cash and trades, did I read somewhere that $3 million is the most that any team can send back in cash in a trade?

Yes, but 3M is not the difference between the MLE & his salary. The 3M would cover about 1 season. He has 2+ left on his deal.
