<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>According to an infallible source, the Mavericks' coach pressed team owner Mark Cuban to deal Dirk after the NBA's MVP came up shamefully small against the Warriors in last season's upsetting first-round elimination, but was overruled.

Johnson's ideal leader is supposed to offer positive guidance and counsel on and off the court, as well as in and out of church. That disqualifies Kidd. Still, one sphere of influence is better than none. Convinced a championship is otherwise beyond capture, Avery compromised his primary concern.</div>

    I don't buy this.

Dirk is one of the best players in the league and they wanted to get rid of him?

This further cements my thoughts of the Mavs looking at Josh Howard as more of their franchise player than Dirk. And honestly, Dirk might be the most overrated superstar in the league. He's soft, doesn't defend well, disappears in the playoffs, and chokes in the clutch. Not qualities I'd want from franchise guy. But, if they are looking to shop him, now would be the time, cause they're going to get maximum value from him since he is coming off an MVP year and is having a good year.

Well even if the Avery wanted Dirk to be traded I doubt they wanted to start rebuilding around Josh Howard at this point. So, my question is, who would they have traded Dirk for? I don't think they would look for young players and expiring contracts, but rather a superstar in return.

Barkley was traded from Philly to Pheonix and won the MVP for Pheonix that year.

I think Moses Malone is the only player to win MVP and then be traded in that offseason, which was '82 from the Rockets to the 76ers.
