<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>One of the reasons Kidd requested a trade was that he was upset Carter got the big deal and he couldn't get a one-year, $15 million extension. Also, according to sources close to the Kidd, he thought Carter wasn't a superstar-caliber player.</div> Record I know the subject has been brought up before, but I just realized it's not the first time it caused a major change in the Nets PG position. Contract envy was the reason Marbury forced his way out of Minnesota. He was traded for Kidd and now Kidd is traded because of his envy for Carter's contract. Amazing that athletes, who make tens of millions of dollars, wrap their ego in the amount of money they get paid. After a certain level does it matter? If you have signed a contract that pays you more than $50 million you really shouldn't care what anyone else gets. It's funny money at that stage.
I can't profess to know what I'm talking about, but I've read this sort of discussion before, and I agree with what most other people think, which is: professional athletes are ultracompetitve people, almost unhealthily so. For instance, many athletes turn to gambling--even something as silly as betting on who can make the most shots in a row or high-stakes poker with their buddies or something like that. How much they get paid is just another competition to them. To be considered "the best," to have bragging rights, they want--or need--to be the highest paid guy. That's why the top guys are always trying to renegotiate their contracts in sports where it is allowed. It sounds ridiculous to "normal" people who don't share their ultracompetitive behavior. Remember, these are kids who play games against their children to win, which is just insane to me.

The crazy thing is that the one that makes them so great at what they do is also very destructive to them.
