Got this idea from another site but it’s a good one so I’m using it Who wins these Dream match ups?!? (pardon the pun ) BJ Penn (#2 Lightweight in the world*) vs Shinya Aoki Sean Sherk vs JZ Calvancante (#5 Lightweight in the world*) Roger Huerta vs Gilbert Melendez (#4 Lightweight in the world*) Kenny Floria vs Tatsuya Kawajiri Joe Stevenson vs Mistsuhiro Ishida Joe Lauzon vs Artur Oumakhanov Hermes Franca vs Koutetsu Boku (rematch from 2005) Frankie Edgar vs Andre “Dida” Amade Spencer Fisher vs Joachim Hansen Clay Guida vs Caol Uno Marcus Aurelio vs Buscape Firmino *Rankings based on S2’s Hot Six rankings Unfortunately no Takanori Gomi #1 LW in the world as he’s signed with the World Victory Road promotion and is fighting on March 5th for that promotion. What do you think of the matchups? Who wins? Did I miss anyone? comment away!
my winners: BJ Penn - Penn is one of the best pound for pound when motivated, he's as good or better on the ground than Aoki and has better stand up and is now training seriously. Sean Sherk - JC is on a tear, but no one can outmuscle Sherk at 155 and he's strong enough to get out of submissions and has strong not great stand up. Would be a great fight IMO. Gilbert Melendez - Melendez has only lost to the best while Huerta is only now starting to get tested. A huge step up in competition for Huerta, I think he fails. Tatsuya Kawajiri - tough as nails and a solid striker, I think he frustrates Kenny by taking Kenny's best shots and keeps coming forward and gets the decision win. Joe Stevenson - Joe could get subbed, but I think his wrestling and GnP could pull off this fight Joe Lauzon - honestly don't know much about artur, Joe is a tough kid and well rounded, I think he'll be a contender eventually. Hermes Franca - Franca avenges his loss from 2005 Andre “Dida” Amade - Edgar's dream run ends abrubtley facing a very tough Dida Spencer Fisher - both are fav fighters of mine to watch, but I think SPencer's crisper stand up wins this bout Caol Uno - Uno via vast experience and toughness Marcus Aurelio - was his win vs Gomi a fluke? This fight would tell. Buscape has some ring rust, gimme the ATT trained guy
Gomi's contract is non-exclusive, IIRC, so he can still compete somewhere else if he feels like it. BJ Penn has been talking about fighting him again. Anyways, the depth at lightweight right is arguably the best in the history of the sport across any weight class. There are seriously ten or more guys who could be world champion and nobody would be surprised. Unfortunate that the Japanese guys don't seem interested in competing in the States.
well a few japanese fighters come over and fought at the last WEC and went 1-1 they've historically not done very well and they're making good $ in Japan. Gomi won't be part of the current GP unless he has a first round bye due to his commitment on March 5th.. at least I imagine he won't be. what do you think of the matchups I created?
