<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>INDIANAPOLIS -- If Rod Thorn had had his way, Jason Kidd would be in Portland right now, and the Nets point guard of the future would be Jarrett Jack.

Not that the Nets president has any regrets: He believes Devin Harris is the ideal candidate to help take his team into the next five years. Thorn just didn't like to negotiate while stuck in a box -- which essentially was constructed by Kidd's big mouth.

"It was a box, and it didn't help it when Jason went public -- it sort of killed a lot of his value," Thorn conceded. "There was a team I was talking to that had interest -- more than cursory interest, let's say. And once he did that (announced he sought a trade), they totally quit on it."

Thorn would only identify the team as "a midlevel team out west," but several league officials confirmed it as the Trail Blazers -- which, in fact, is the only midlevel team out west nowaday
The Blazers were to send Jack and Raef LaFrentz to the Nets along with other cap-fillers for Kidd, but the Nets captain sabotaged the deal by publicly requesting a deal on Jan. 28 -- either inadvertently or otherwise.

According to those league officials, who chose to remain anonymous in order to avoid meddling in Portland's affairs, the Blazers never wanted to assist Dallas in obtaining Kidd; they wanted the 34-year-old point guard for themselves to help raise a team of promising kids in the midst of a 3-5 slide.

But as soon as Kidd announced that he could no longer play in New Jersey, Blazers officials concluded that he wouldn't be content playing for an up-and-coming team in Portland, either.</div>

Devin is five times better but Rudy would have been the main part of the deal.

It lowers your value because then other teams know that your team wants to trade you.

If we re-sign Diop for a reasonable number, I like the Mavs deal better.

If we don't, then I'd rather have the cap space and Rudy Fernandez.

think back at the timing . . . . is this the reason the Nets refused to extend Kidd's contract in the first place? because they were already discussing a deal involving him?

jack is average, that's all he is, not great but not bad, you can live with him but you can do better... devin is more of the big name guy who has all of the potential, jack will at most be an eric snow type of guy, devin for me

I think Rudy Fernandez is the best player in either deal and he's not signed to a huge contract through 2013.

Still, Devin is the safer route, I guess.

That article mentions Jack, Raef and "cap filler", Rudy doesn't make a salary yet, so "cap filler" doesn't refer to him, and I see no other mention of him.  Where did you see his name in this?

KP loves Rudy too much. He wouldn't trade him for Kidd

There is zero chance KP would give up more in a trade than Cuban & Nelson.

Jack's a decent player but he's a nice bench player, not a starter IMO. Rodriguez may have the highest potential but I see Frank having the same issues with him as he does Marcus where it could delay seeing that greatness in his time here. With management backing Frank as coach I feel Devin was he best choice being a guard LF will fall in love with with his all around jack of all trades master of none game. Best case scenario Frank grooms him into a top young PG, worse case scenario is he that he services the team until we find a better replacement where his manageable contract can be easily dealt. He may be the safe bet but there is still plenty to be excited about as well.

Say you're a GM. Would you be less inclined to give more to get Kidd, now that Kidd has made it known that he no longer wants to play for the Nets and is trying to come to (for argument's sake) your team?

Plus it makes the other team question whether he wants to go to their team as well.
