Nets Take a Look at Jason Thompson
March 6, 2008, 11:31 pm Kiki Vandeweghe may not yet be building up those frequent flier miles like Ed Stefanski did … but he’s certainly taking advantage of the Nets’ EZ-Pass account. Last week, he scouted UConn’s Hasheem Thabeet in New Brunswick and Rider’s Jason Thompson in Lawrenceville. Both big men have been linked to the Nets in mock drafts. Thabeet is 7′-3″, while Thompson is 6′-11″.

So he plans to get rid of one or two of our bigs?

well I don't think Swift will have long connection with the Nets. If he exercises his option (and he will) IMO he'll be traded during next season. That leaves us with Krstic, Boone, Swat, Diop (who knows if we re-sign him). you can never have too many bigs [IMG] but it would be nice if we drafted SG/SF as a back up to Vince/RJ.

I think we need a 7 foot big man who actually plays down low. I don't know if Thabeet is that guy but he would sure be a good pick with the Dallas pick if he falls that far.

Thompson also has a brother on the team who is quite talented as well as he is the second leading scorer behind this brother.

He stands 6'6 shooting above .500 from the feild and .427 from three land. Not bad either.

I am a Uconn fan, so allow me to weigh in on Thabeet.

His postives are that he is a big body, can really alert shots down low, and he can rebound.

His Negtives are that he sometimes gets out of place with his matchup's, his Offensive is no existenent, and he is not the fastest guy around.

Think Jason Collins with some Offensvie skills, not many.

He will be a lottery pick, and the nets should pass with there pick.

I also like the big men we have i dont understand why we should trade Swat, Boone, or Kristic and get bigs that we dont know about.

The thing is with our big men, how many might turn out to be big time number players?

Krstic has reached his potential IMO. 16 - 18 PPG is good for a center but he has absolutely no defensive skills.

Boone is still young and promising but he's nothing more than the average starter, great role player.

Williams is shown he can be a great defensive player with shot blocking, but his offensive skills are not as far advanced to be a prime scorer.

Now Thabeet may not be an Emeka or LaMarcus in waiting but even those guys were just names in a draft who turned out to be quite talented. I think the Nets are just looking for that big man to break into the league and be a 20 - 10 guy for us so when 2010 comes around, a FA would have someone in the post to play with.

If that is what the nets are looking for Thabeet is not that guy trust me. He is not going to give you 20 points.

Trust me I am proabbly the biggest UConn fan around, and I am sure Marcus and Josh would love another Huskie around here, however Thabeet is not going to be that guy as I have said. He can and will be good, I doubt he is as good as he will be picked in the positon he will be.

A guy the nets should keep a eye on, is AJ Price the SG from UConn. He could be a nice addition to this team and Marcus and Josh know him, Price was a FR when Josh and Marcus where JR'S.

Thabeet if he is smart he will stay at Uconn and be the #1 pick next year, has talent however he has a very very long way to go.

It sounds like Thabeet may have the same skill sets as a guy we already have in Diop.

Exactly. I dont feel like giving up either Boone or Swat to get Diop JR.

Thabeet is overrated, and has no offensive skills. I agree with Josh_Boone on something for, like, the second time in my life.

On the other hand, there's another overrated big who we should look at: Roy Hibbert. He's got a pretty consistent jumper, plays solid defense, can do a bit of rebounding, and can score in the post (one of his best skills). While he may not be all that dominant, he could be just the type of player we need.

Of course, if we can't get to him, we may have to settle for a good wing player (if one falls to us) or a good European player (of which I know nothing about).

If anyone who knows anything about some European players that the Nets could draft, or that the Nets are looking at, please post 'em!!

I haven't seen much of him play but from the times I have seen him play, he comes across as a slow plodding center. It may work for him against smaller players in the NCAA, but in the NBA with more athletic bigs, I see him being nothing more than a role player in the mold of Jason Collins his first 3 years with the Nets.

I don't keep track of who the Nets scout, but I'm partial to internationals Gallinari and Batum in the draft.

We need a Wing and maybe a backup for RJ at the 3.

I think Kristic, Boone, Swat and maybe Diop should be the big men.

Maybe it's me but i dont want to lose the youngsters.

I keep hearing about Batum. Hm..

And as for Hibbert, he is pretty slow. But he is nothing close to Jason Collins. In fact, he's a much, much better scorer than Collins...which is why I'd think he'd be nice for us. He's a good scoring option in the post, he can hit a jumper, he's a good free throw shooter..and he's not a complete liability on defense. I wouldn't mind at all if we drafted Hibbert.

We're not in control of Diop's future at all. Same with Krstic. While I agree that they would be a good part of the rotation, they're unrestricted free agents, and they get to choose whether or not they'd want to re-sign with the Nets.
