There should never be a reason why he doesn't get double-digit rebounds every single night," Richard Jefferson said of Boone. "When Josh scores 15 or 17 points, he always has 13 rebounds to go with it. Now I want to see one night where he has four points but 14 rebounds. That's where you see growth and maturity from him, where he doesn't have to score to positively affect the game."
How about leading by EXAMPLE, Mr. 4-12, 12/3/3, no defense

many other quote from the baldy. honestly, someone needs to call rj out. he's been sucking majorly yet is still criticizing marcus and boone when the team expects more from him. rj has improved nicely but i prefer the rj in his rookie year who was quick, athletic, and ran all day long, not this rj who's slow, tired, and thinks he can shoot when he can't. i miss jason kidd

It's always a good idea to add sources (such as a link to where you got that quote from).

And I believe RJ being a "leader" to this team would be a moot point. He's trying to be a leader now, and we suck. If he wasn't trying to be a leader, we would still suck. His leadership abilities just aren't there.

(A tiny bit off-topic) I'm still hoping that possibly this team could pull it all together. It's still possible (in my mind at least) that this team and all its new players could eventually gel and become a playoff team. I know, it's a long shot...but it's possible.

Since when are leaders suppose to be infallible?

I think RJ's body of work over 7 years in the league give him the right to discuss how his fellow young players are playing. The article was about Boone struggling lately and we don't know the context of the question or everything Jefferson said. Could have complimented him too and that was on the editing room floor.

It's not like RJ was complaining as much as he was offering guidance. I don't think you need to be perfect to offer guidance to a young player. I think people on here are more sensitive than the players.

i dont mind him criticizing some of the kids but he has to understand they are young guys. rj was just as inconsistent as all of them his second and first year, youd think he'd understand that but he's got an inflated ego who is coming off like a jerk, how about taking responsibilty and being a leader on and off the court, instead of criticizing the players publicily? if anyone, he should be calling himself out, for such a big mouth, he's been showing little game

I disagree with the way it was said, but I don't think RJ needs to be playing perfect basketball inorder to say something. When you are dealing with a young player like that you need to compliment the positives along with the constructive criticism. If that was a word-for-word quote he's an idiot. If they cut the quote a little short to fit the story, or to not be redundant with something said earlier, then D'Alessandro is the idiot for making RJ look like an ass.

As much as RJ isn't a natural leader, I respect him for stepping up and trying to be the leader. Someone has to take charge and keep the guys involved, naturally we all want VC should be the leader but as we all know for is toronto days, he ain't much of one.

In my opinion, RJ's significant offensive improvements justify him to make these comments; in his mind, I mean. I think its possible that RJ has fallen in love with one side of the ball (easy, Luke) and not the other. His defensive game has taken a hit; he used to be our best lock-down defender. As his offense has increased, his intensity on D has decreased.

It could be that he's lusting after the more attractive part of basketball, scoring points. Can't blame him, he's taken a back seat his entire career: in the shadows of KVH, then KMart, now Vince in terms of attention due to scoring. If I'm not mistaken he's our leading scorer on the year, so maybe in his mind this is how he's stepped up as a leader.

His resurgence as a scorer, and as someone who had serious talk about All Star selections (at least in the beginning of the year) have had a bigger impact on his career than being a decent fundamental-type player. So you're right, RJ is trying to be a leader, but in the wrong ways. Like its hard to follow in the footsteps of Kidd in terms of being our next PG, its hard to step up to his intangible roles as well (pre-migraine era [IMG])

heh... im torn between it cuz hes struggling as well... he should comment on his game but then comment on the rest of the players... its true... boone should always have double digit rebs cuz he plays a lot of minutes and is athletic enough to do so. but rj should do some of that ON the court as well

His offense hasn't improved. He just forces more shots. He's down 4% and over an assist off his career averages. He's getting to the line slightly more, but his FT% is lower so he's making the same amount as his peak seasons. Basically, he's a less efficient, less effective, more selfish, losery version of his previous offensive self.

Combine that with his lethargic worse-than-Vince-Carter defense and his lack of interest in hitting the boards or going after loose balls, and he just looks like a complete clown when he opens his idiot mouth.

Basically, he's become one of the laziest, most selfish players in the league. F him. Boone should squash his peanut head.

And yet he sees that he's putting up numbers, and sees that he's the head honcho know that Jason is gone. Unfortunately he doesn't see that it's a de facto promotion. It's kind of sad.

He's shooting the same percentage as last season taking 4 more shots per game, shooting more free throws at nearly 80% which is 6% better than last season and 2% better than his career avg. Rebounds are down because he's the only one leaking out on the break to get the team some easy baskets, and that's a trend that started last season. Turnovers and assists pretty much where they always are. Yes his FG% is down compared to his career #s because he had 3 seasons where he hit at 50% and he doesn't get as many easy baskets as he did early in his career. I totally agree about his defense not being as good as it was. But he is not jacking up shots all over the place inorder to improve his numbers... he's the model of efficiency.

This team is a joke with the offense running through two guys (I guess it doesn't help that they are the only 2 on the roster that can create a shot and score). The game has been made way too hard for all of them. I've been a defender of Frank for a long time, but I'm really starting to think he's lost it and doesn't know what to do. Smart guy that can take a team with a system in place and get the most out of it, but I don't know if he can come up with his own system and integrate the players into it. He's too smart and trying to do too much... players can't grasp it all.

So you are comparing his numbers with last season when he was hobbled by injuries and completely ineffective for the majority of the year? That only suppots my point that his offense has declined, not improved.

As for his FT%, I wrote that he was making the same amount as his peak seasons, even though he is getting to the line more. He started the season 67-69, but since then he has shot right at his career average of 77%. That's probably the most positive aspect of his offensive game, but is certainly doesn't represent any improvement.

The more troubling thing is that this offensive decline is accompanied with the complete atrophy of the parts of his game that made him a complete player. He was a good rebounder, an excellent passer, an opportunistic hustler, a willing defender who at least made his man work hard and a guy who could change the game with a key play in crunch time.

Now he is a negative in every one of those areas. He's just not a very good player. I hear the media saying his name along with Kidd and Carter as if he is some kind of star and the Nets should be better because they have him. The truth is that he is a mediocre player who is not worth his salary. He's a losing player. It sucks.

I see you have a strong opinion on this (and I can see it won't change). But for the sake of others reading let's not compare Jefferson's shooting to last year or his total career avg, but to other wings that take a lot of shots.

    Jefferson: 45.9%
    Redd: 44.8%
    James: 48.5%
    Anthony 45.5%
    Maggette: 46.7%
    Richardson: 43.8%
    Stephen Jackson: 41.7%
    Bryant: 46.6%
    Pierce: 45.0%
    Gay: 45.7%
    Ginobli: 45.8%
    Turoglu: 45.2%
    Igoudala: 45.5%
    Josh Howard: 45.5%
    Granger: 44.2%
    Jamison: 43%
    Nocioni: 43.5%
    Outlaw: 44%
    Lewis: 44.9%

Only 3 of those guys shoot better than him: Lebron, Kobe and Maggette. You can't argue with the fact his rebounds are down because he's the only player willing to leak up court for an easy fastbreak bucket, which is a part of the team game plan.

Yes his defense is worse than it's been and he's not as good a player because of that. But you can't say he isn't playing well on the offensive side. Especially considering the way this pathetic offense is constructed. And you can't say he's a "losing player" because he's on a nightmare of a team and losing for the first time in his career. Is he the main guy for a franchise? god no. Good 2nd option? yes. Overpaid? Yes, but only by about $3-4mm and not his fault.
