The honor was announced at a March 12 press conference in New York's Grand Hyatt. Flynn shares the honor with Pittsburgh's DeJuan Blair. The BIG EAST Conference Awards were selected by the league's coaches. Flynn, an honorable mention All-BIG EAST Conference honoree, joins a prominent list of previous Syracuse Rookie of the Year winners. Pearl Washington, Derrick Coleman, Lawrence Moten and Carmelo Anthony also earned the recognition in their first years of collegiate play. Flynn ranks third on the squad in scoring (15.9 ppg.) and leads the Orange in assists (163) and ranks second in steals (47). A starter in all 31 games, Flynn has averaged 36.0 minutes per game this season. In BIG EAST Conference games, Flynn has averaged a league-best 39.2 minutes per outing. He also earned NABC and USBWA All-District II teams. Notre Dame's Mike Brey was named coach of the year and Luke Harangody was selected player of the year. Connecticut's Hasheem Thabeet was tabbed defensive player of the year. The improved player award was presented to Sam Young of Pittsburgh. Patrick Ewing, Jr., of Georgetown earned the sixth man award. The conference sportsmanship award was shared by Ronald Roman of Pittsburgh and Darris Nichols of West Virginia.
