Get rid of the idiotic trapezoid. Solution #2 - No-Touch Icing Either or both would be fine with me. What are defensemen supposed to do? They have no protection at all. Poor Kurtis Foster might have to get married in a wheelchair. So pointless.

No touch icing would be a lot better. International does fine with it and I believe the NHL will too.
No-touch icing ftw. Not only does it eliminate these ridiculously pointless injuries, but it also prohibits teams from "dumping the puck" as their primary offensive strategy. That makes for really boring hockey at times.

It takes a real man to hurtle into the boards for no reason. I'm with you though on tradition. I don't mind giving the offensive player a chance to cancel the icing. That's why my first option is to get rid of the stupid trapezoid.
The goalie woulda been a idiot to play that puck. I dont want to see a guy injured but other then no-touch icing I cant think of a way to stop that play.

If you aren't keen on no-touch icing it would help quite a bit. I just don't see many plays where the offensive guy wins the race in a situation like this play to make no-touch icing a detriment. The longer, slower clears to the corners are the ones the offense has a better shot at, but the goalie can make a decision whether to bail out his defenseman on those if they nix the trapezoid.
Unless the rules are also changed to allow goalies to get hit when they are out and handling the puck, I'm against getting rid of the trapezoid
You know what the NHL could do, is if there is excessive contact during the race to the puck call a penalty.
