I'm not trying to come down hard on Boone what I don't understand exactly why he starts. I mean he just had like 26 points last night but it didn't even seem like it. He's a pretty good rebounder but that's about all I see out of him. IMO he doesn't go strong to the hoop, he's not a presence in the paint, he's not a shot blocker, he's not athletic, he's not a big time dunker, he's a joke from the free throw line, he might have the worst hands I've ever seen although he's getting a little better at catching the ball, and he doesn't have any post moves. I really don't get why he even plays. Statistically he's a pretty good player, but watching the games to me it just seems that somebody else should be in. Sorry especially to that guy in here who know's Boone I'm not trying to knock him I just really don't see why he's out there.

    I noticed you didn't suggest a replacement.

He's playing well. He understands the team defensive concepts and rebounds well. Gets a lot of offensive put backs. Wish he could defend the quicker PFs in the league so Nenad can move to his more natural position of center. Right now I think they do too many defensive schemes to accomodate both him and Nenad in the lineup and they aren't working well. My ideal lineup would be Nenad and Williams with Boone as the first big off the bench, but Williams is not ready. This is why we go with a lot of small lineups and if Boki isn't clicking we suck. We have no one on the team that can defend quick, good shooting bigs more than 5 feet away from the basket. Boone, Krstic, and Diop are too slow, Sean is too raw, and Swift isn't smart enough. This is why players like Boozer, Randolph, Gooden, Josh Smith, Warrick, and Kleiza have career nights against us.

A better questions is why is Diop so offensively inept? The guy couldn't put the ball in the basket if he caught it wide open underneath. He's the new Collins. And where are all the blocks he is known for? Those poor kids are going to be starving in Africa if they wait for blocks to get a check from him.

No don't mean that, but they get to do everything they want when they play the Nets. Good defensive teams make it difficult for those players and hold them at or below their averages. Against the Nets these guys well exceeded their averages.

Let's see who has been the most cinsitant bigman on the nets to this point?

Had a 26 point night last night and he gets attacked?

Boone is the best big the nets have, and he starts for the simple reason he does not make dumb plays, and do dumb rookie things.

Plus he is #2 from his rookie class in double double's.

The FT'S are getting better, it's all about confidence with Josh, the kid is getting better and as long as he does what he has to do, he will contine to start.

I would like to see Swat and Boone starting with Kristic off the bench.

This is a pointless thread. It's not exactly penetrating insight to point out that the Nets don't have any all-star caliber bigs.

It shouldn't be difficult at all for Smith, Warrick, and Kleiza to be able to take advantage of Boone. He isn't exactly the quickest defensive player around. It's still pretty disappointing he couldn't handle Warrick, considering he faced him in college a few times. [IMG]

I dont understand the hate on boone. First of all, he has been nothing short of solid for us, and I cant believe you said he has bad hands. He's pretty good at catching those no-looks passes from Marcus, Devin, and Vince. In addition, who do the Nets have that is better than boone? sean? The guy has been piss poor since the allstar break. Swift? You wanna start a big man with an bball IQ of a peanut and thinks he has a jumpshot?
And Boone isnt bad. He would be a pretty good complimentary big to a dominant big imo. sadly, we dont have one of those.

there's no reason to be disapppointed with Boone. He is intelligent, improving, is capable of playing decent to good defense, knows his strengths and weaknesses, and stays within himself. He is nearly automatic when he gets the ball underneath the basket. He's a very, very, very good offensive rebounder, which the nets have long lacked.

I look at it this way:

Devin Harris, Carter, RJ, and Boone are 4/5 of one of the top starting units in the league. All they need is an elite scoring big to complete that unit--Duncan, Pau, Boozer, Garnett, whatever. Obviously, they aren't going to get one of those guys. But, seen in that light, it helps to appreciate how well balanced and talented those other four players are. Those four guys can play above-average defense; they can run the break; they can play half-court; they can score; they can rebound. However, the Nets now need to decide what sort of team they want to have, and fill that fifth starting spot and their bench accordingly . . . . for instance, their bench right now is a collection of NBA-caliber players that just don't mesh with each other very well. They are just a collection of players without a consistent mindset. Without an impact big, they'll never be an "elite" team, but if they can come up with a plan for how they want the team to play, and restructure the bench accordingly, they could have a very good team.

Don't you think if they were one of the top starting units in the league that the nets would at least be in the playoffs? Carter is overrated, and he's gone soft. RJ, Boone, and especially Harris have potential to be very good together. Boone is just a rookie and hes going to get better. He's starting because they want him to develop faster so next year, maybe him Nenad and Williams can form a formidable frontcourt in the east. IMO the Nets should really be starting both Boone and Williams, and make Nenad work his ass off for the minutes he gets. Then maybe that will jumpstart all three of them into getting better. Furthermore, the Nets should be tanking the season to get as high of a lottery pick as possible, because the highest seed they're getting is 7 or 8 which is automatically a knockout against the pistons or the celtics. They just need to keep playin the young guys, develop them, get a good pick, and hopefully the next couple years will be better.

you have reading comprehension issues. As I said, they need an impact big to complete the lineup, but that isn't likely. Without an impact big, they can still be a very good team if they construct their bench with a consistent focus. I don't know what that focus should be, nor do I care--I just know that someone has to make a decision and make the relevant personnel decisions. A team CANNOT be successful without an inside scoring threat OR any consistent scoring (and defense) off the bench. Optimally, you need both to compete for a title, as well as a capable point, and an ouside scoring threat.

The reason the nets have been terrible all season has to do with the pitiful bench (magnified dramatically when Krstic couldn't play), Kidd's indifference, and Carter's injury. I believe that Devin Harris is an upgrade over Kidd, plus the Nets have significantly upgraded their bench (not saying that they should keep all their new players, just that they have trade value, which the previous collection didn't have). Their bench players right now include a couple of players with loads of potential that are not currently capable of contributing to a winning team, and one or all of them should be traded, in my view.

don't get me wrong--without an elite big to complete their starting unit, they'll never be an elite team. However, they could get to "very good" by fixing the bench, in my view. "Fixing," as I've said, includes devloping a vision for the identity of the team, and building around it, and not deviating from it.

Carter isn't overrated by anyone, Boone is not a rookie and has already developed substantially, Boone is starting because he's our best and most consistent big man (sadly), Sean should be the one working his ass off for minutes since he is the inconsistent rookie, Nenad is coming off an injury and confidence injury and should turn out to be an important part of this team (and has shown that before), the Nets not making the playoffs has more to do with the whole Jason Kidd debacle/not having Krstic/Vince getting injured, and lastly, 1st round against the Pistons or the Celtics is not an automatic knockout. You never know what's gonna happen.

sorry sometimes my reading comprehension issues get the best of me...but anyway, they aren't getting an elite post player unless they make a trade. I think they should still be working to get JO, and try to center it around VC. I don't know if Indy would be interested, but thats just one example. They really need to lose the rest of their games and miss the playoffs if they know whats good for them though.

I'm very confused by your post. You first talk about the Nets needing to trade to get an elite post player and then you start talking about trading for JON.

That is like saying, you need to buy an ice cream cone, here let me sell you a lump of coal.

Do we really need a referendum on Josh Boone? There's no need to defend the decision to start him. The thread starter didn't even give an alternative plan.
