By making it dirt cheap to subscribe, they may be losing money mailing the magazines but they could jack up advertising prices because of the higher installed reader base.

You can get some really cheap deals on ebay for magazine subscriptions because of it. Some of them will only be a couple bucks off the regular price, but more generic ones (ie. Maxim, Blender, etc.) you can get like 4 years for $2
