http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story...mp;sportCat=nba One of the best articles i've read in a while. <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>How bad is it for Kobe? In a 2004-05 season in which Kobe averaged 27.6 points, 5.9 rebounds and 6.0 assists, P.J. Brown -- yes, you read right -- received more MVP votes than he did, and Brown received only one vote. How many games did PJ's team win that year? 18.</div>
Well the PJ Brown vote is clearly retarded lol. No argument there. Actually when looking at the voting that year, There were 3 players who received votes who did not make playoffs: 1. Lebron James - 93 points on 43 votes Cavs had 42 wins and missed the playoffs by 1 win. Cavs improved their record by 7 games. Lebron shot 47% up from 42%, scored 27.2 ppg up from 20.9 ppg, 7.4 rpg, 7.2 apg, 2.2 spg. 2. Kevin Garnett - 15 points from 6 votes total Timberwolves had 44 wins and missed the playoffs by 1 win, he won the MVP the year before, and put up spectacular numbers 22 ppg, 50% FG%, 13.5 rpg, 5.7 apg, 1.4 bpg, 1.5 spg. 3. PJ Brown 1 point from 1 vote, 18 wins, 11 ppg, 9 rpg. Just a media guy who didn't care about his fifth selection vote. Clearly there are probably 50 players more deserving than PJ that season. 1. Kobe had been considered the #2 guy on the Lakers up till that point in time, and the MVP can't go to the #2 guy. 2. The Lakers the year before won the Pacific division, made it to the Finals and then in 04-05 won 34 games. 3. Kobe didn't play a full season (66 games). 4. Kobe shot his lowest FG% since his sophmore season. (43%) Anyway, obviously the MVP voting thing is biased, and often times there are multiple candidates who are deserving and put forth great contributions to their team. Arguing who didn't get a single vote, you could bring up Paul Pierce, who played 82 games, led his team to 45 wins, shot 45.5% FG%, 37% from 3 point range (Kobe only has one season above 37% 3 point %, which is his rookie year), 21.6 ppg, 6.6 rpg, 4.2 apg, 1.6 spg.
Kobe hasn't won the MVP yet because he either wasn't considered the best player on his team, or he didn't win enough and the MVP IS INDEED a team-based award (no matter what anyone tells you). The whole article is pointless, Kobe has a great chance of winning the MVP because of the sadistic standards Writers use. Factoring in career awards, Kobe has also gotten some seniority votes over Paul, and that is the way it's been for a long time now (eg Shaq/Duncan discrimination because of prior MVPs awards). The MVP has always been a joke award, the criteria is too fuzzy and amorphous. I won't cry if Kobe wins it this year though, he can finally give everyone a big **** you to many haters. :}

Kobe should have a MVP award two years ago. I do think the MVP is too much based on team results, and like you said very "fuzzy and amorphous" criteria. I personally think individual accomplishments, Lebron is a notch above Kobe this season, but for justice's sake I feel Kobe should win one due to not getting one when he deserved it most, and Lebron will win one later. Chris Paul's done a wonderful job too, so it makes it hard to decide. KG isn't playing his best year of basketball right now, although it is still at an elite level.
I dont think they should keep the MVP from Kobe, has dont so much for the lakers, Taking a team to the playoffs by yourself is a big thing, and he makes the players around him look better. This year he is not doing it by himself he has got people to help but that doesn't mean he can't get it. Now Chris Paul is my favorite player and everything but i dont think he should get it this year over Kobe. or any other player
