I'll let you read it; It sounds to me like Son of Howie will be the pick. Regardless, it will be a Long. Last year, the media was so effing certain that Miami would draft Quinn last yr. Parcells & co are better at playing the media than Saban & Cameron combined.
When I read the thread Title I thought it waz the Heat. Damn both Dolphin and Heat have a chance to have the top pick. has that ever happen?
clearly they see the remarkable size and strength of Jake Long and have decided to draft him #1 and play him at NT....

I would not be surprised if some media hack saw that and ran w/ it. Seriously, the so called "expert" who wrote this article claims C Long is a 4-3 DE. His college coach said CL reminded him of Mike Vrabel.
Based on the fact that they're already in contract negotiations with him, I'd say it's safe to say that Jake Long is likely going to go first.
What Ireland said about "pillar of defense" is nothing to read into. I think that he just made an honest mistake and is no closer to taking defense than they are offense (Jake Long in particular). Seriously, specifying "defense" narrows nothing down for us. The top of this years draft is loaded with defensive players. The top 5 players on thier list are probably 4 defense and 1 offense. On the other hand, if Ireland would have "slipped" in the word "offense" into that same sentence, then we would have more reason to believe that Jake Long is all but locked up at the number 1 pick this year. In the spirit of election year, lets all take every minute soundbite and blow it completely out of proportion. So do you still believe its Chris Long based on what he said?
I think the pick will get traded to KC or ATL next thursday or friday with the Chiefs being the most likely, but if it doesnt, I now think its Chris Long....and Im basing that solely on what Ireland said....If you get some video, look at his face when they told him what he said....either hes a world class actor or he let their intentions slip out....

QUOTE (TheBeef @ Apr 18 2008, 02:04 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I think the pick will get traded to KC or ATL next thursday or friday with the Chiefs being the most likely, but if it doesnt, I now think its Chris Long....and Im basing that solely on what Ireland said....If you get some video, look at his face when they told him what he said....either hes a world class actor or he let their intentions slip out....
He was interrupted in the middle of his speech. The reason why he got interrupted was because a reporter is heard laughing and says, "...defense?....hahahahha". At that point, Jeff understood why they were laughing at him. He rephrased it to correct it. More laughter. I did look at his face, but am not real good at reading faces. I think that there is a smaller chance that they are listening for those trade offers that you mentioned. If Jeff says things like "defense", then all teams lower looking to move up panic and offer more to get there. If he says "offense", then he gets significantly less offers for trades (that 4:1 ratio). On the other hand: when you have the #1 pick in a draft, and you already have decided who you are going to use it on, then do you really care who knows? No one can trade up to steal him based on what you say in public. If you don't care who knows, then do you continue to speak as if you are not decided? As if it could be any side of the ball? No, not really. Chances are you have already begun negotiations with that person, since it is best to get that stuff all taken care of before the draft. An advantage of having pick #1. [Al Davis calls Bill Parcells. He performs a jedi mind trick on Parcells. Parcells stares blankly into the air. Al tells Bill to trade the pick and send C Long to the Dark Side.....like his father]

Don't forget they toyed around w/ Braylon Edwards 2 yrs ago. I don’t think Ireland is in the same boat as Jim Mora (playoffs?) or Denny Green (The Bears are who we thought they were…)

That being said; Who knows what... Crazy Al could force from Matt Millen and Dave Wannstedt? The Shadow knows. Sorry. Couldn't resist.

The Raiders would probably pay Chris Long more money than the dolphins, and the NFL would be much better if the Raiders D had Chris Long. It would be lots of d. Im sure he can have #75 if he wants.

Ding! Fries are done? http://www.americanangst.com/dingfries.html (sound included) Anyway, C Long is supposed to be a Raider. That is what the master has planned.
Its been a while since ive seen Masters of the Universe, did Skeletor have any mind powers? I think teams have called and tried to low ball the Dolphins to get that pick....i dont believe the money is nearly as phohibitive as it once was....I could see the Rams, Falcons, Raiders, Chiefs, Jets, Ravens, Saints, or Panthers moving up and all for different players....I think the chiefs are the one though....if they trade Allen for 17th overall + additional picks, all the sudden they are starting completely over and have a ton of ammo and it wont take as much as normal to move to #1 and get their franchise QB....
I think they're taking Jake Long. Even though Dorsey and Long are #1 and #2 in this draft in my opinion, LT is probably the best position to build around outside of QB. If they feel Beck is the guy then you need to start putting the pieces in place. Plus they signed Justin Smiley and they can move Vernon Carey back to his original position. They could have one of the most improved offensive lines in football and looked how that helped Cleveland last year.

Jake Long will be even better than Thomas in my opinion. For teams like Miami and Oakland that need help in that position, they should really think twice about passing on that guy. Having said all that, my head will explode if Chris is still there at #4 and Oak passes on him.

There are 30 other teams. Just for laughs; lets say it is the Chiefs. KC trades Allen only to draft Chris Long. How would Crazy Al react to seeing Howie decked out in Chiefs gear? Why should the Saints move up to get Dorsey as rumors imply? He could be this years Warren Sapp, Brady Quinn, Aaron Rodgers?
Sparano & co are working on Beck's mechanics & doing what they can to slow the game down for him. If they want to get a QB then Johnson (?) from San Diego or Paul Smith from Tulsa on day 2 or UDFA's possible Phins QB pick in '09 or '10 I agree about a franchise OLT. Its been yrs since Richmond Webb retired and look at the phins OL since. It would be nice to see Vernon stay in one place & may be the one pick Wanny actually got right. lol. I will reiterate Beck needs a TE; Fred Davis may not be there @ the top of round 2 so Parcells IMO should take the kid from OU (in the 3rd or 4th) who may be the most complete. Davis may be the most ready and yet still have the most upside. Keller from Purdue screams overrated IMO.
